I received a Platinum Visa Credit Card offer from Providian Financial
Corporation that offers a 0% introductory on everything until August
2001. Below is an actual quote from the letter I received,
“You’ll pay 0%* on EVERYTHING - purchases, balance transfers, and cash
advances - until August 2001. After that, your standard APR on
purchases and balance transfers will be an incredible 9.99%!”
The terms and conditions are as follows:
Annual percentage rate (APR) for purchases:
0% through your statement date in August 2001 (”Introductory
Period”); after that: 9.99%
This rate will increase to 19.99% (but not during the Introductory
Period) if your minimum payment is received
late 2 or more times in any 6-month period.
Grace Period:
At least 25 days if the New Balance is paid in full by the Payment
Due Date
Balance calculation method:
Average Daily Balance (including new purchases)
Annual Fee:
$0
Minimum Finance charge:
$0
Cash Advance Fee:
3% of the advance ($5 minimum)
Balance Transfer Fee:
$0 for balances transferred during the Introductory Period; after
that 3% for each new balance transfer ($5
minimum, $29 maximum)
Late Fee: $29
Overlimit fee: $29
There is an optional PROVIDIAN POINTS PLUS rewards program where you
will receive Double points on purchases for the first 6 months. A fee
of $48 per year is applied if you join in this program. The first
year’s program fee is waived if act now.
I am considering applying for this card unless you think that there is
something hidden in the fine print which I do not understand. Can you
please reply if this would be a good card to have or not. Thanks.

Providian has a very good prime card, if you can get it. I have their gold card, would give my right arm (well, not really) for their platinum.
They are generous with credit, and I have had no problems with them at all. They were my very first credit card. Customer service has been excellent. I am in the process of getting them to lower my rate. They are resisting, but word is, they will, if I persist.
Of course, you will hear different stories from different individuals, but I would deal with them any day.

I have the platinum card from Aria, nice limit fixed APR 9.9, they have been great with me. I use their online payment system and I have never had any problems with them.
