I am considering starting off with a secured card. Could someone recomend a few reputable institutions to deal with as well as those to be avoided.

I’ve used Sterling Bank and Trust’s Secured CC and it worked well for me. They only have 40$ annual fee (Which is not high at all compared to the other SCCs). No additional/hidden fees. Also they give you a line of credit equal with 120% of your deposit.
