I have better credit than my boyfriend does. He's legally separated from his wife and the debts that she had accrued and stopped paying on is now on both their credit reports. I was wondering if we try to clean up his credit report by disputing some that weren't his and pay on some after the divorce is finalized, will we also be cleaning her credit report also? We want to try to clean his credit report so we could get a house together because he makes more income than I do, but we don't want to do all the work while his ex is benefiting.

I am in the process of cleaning up credit that was reported that belongs to my ex-husband. Still waiting on the outcome from Experian. Food for thought: If you buy a house with your spouse and you get divorced, the mortgage company does not have to remove you from the mortgage, regardless of how the divorce papers read. My EX got the house and I'm still on the mortgage. Only way to get me off is to either refinance or for him to assume the loan. Only catch to that is that it costs money to do either of those things and you have to have a credit check done again to assume. So at this moment, I'm screwed because his credit isn't that great anymore! Just an FYI on this matter!! So make sure you require the partner getting the house to remove you as part of the divorce papers!!!

Janet,

Are we talking personal assets, like automoblies and homes or joint credit cards? If there are joint credit cards your boyfriend needs to close the accounts and she (the ex wife) would need to reapply. The credit card company may allow her to retain the account in her name only, but it's not likely. If there personal assets the only thing your boyfriend can do is either sign over title and have her refinance or make sure she is making the payments each month.
Once his name is removed off of everything that they hold jointly you can begin disputing with your creditors and the credit bureaus. Hope this helps and good luck.
