hi... my name is yolanda and I just turned 18... before you close this window please note that I just desire a brief second of your tine for essential advice... I have no credit and am afraid to get a credit card because nearly everyone I know is in debt. I am looking to build good credit and I want to know what the best way to do that is... should I apply for a credit card and if so, which one would suffice if I'm butt-broke... any info you can offer would be nice... thanks.

Welcome to the board Yolanda. Quick question. Are you in college? If so, I would start there. Many credit card companies solicit college campuses and usually will accept students with no prior credit history. That's how I got started. If you do not attend college or do not have an adult who would be willing to add you on their account as an authorized user you may have to go with a secured card.
A secured card is going to require a deposit and probably an annual fee. When looking for a secured card make sure you apply for one that will report to the three credit bureaus as unsecured. Use the card for small purchases-pay the card on time and always more then the minimum required. After six months try applying for a unsecured Visa/Mastercard or a retail card (Target and Macy's are considered to be pretty lenient on approvals).
It will take a year or two to establish a good credit report, but you will get there. Best of luck.

If your realy butt broke stay as far away from credit cards as you can. I know it's not what you want to hear but if you were my child that is what I would tell you . Soon you would be in the same trap as all the other people you said you knew that were in bad debt. Start with a good savings plan and build from there. this is just my honest opinion. Good luck.
