MBNA has one of the best cards in the business (NEA Travel Rewards Mastercard). They work off of a zone system--similar to other bank travel programs; however, they only have two zones--not three. Flights within a zone require 10,000 points. Flights between zones require 15,000. Unfortunately, they will be making major changes to the program at the end of teh year. The card will no longer be attractive because they are eliminating zones and are requiring 25,000 miles.
There are other zone cards on the market; however, the three zone system does not help me. You really need to look at each program to see what works for you based on where you live and travel. The MilesOne Visa is a good option for only $19. If you charge quite a bit I would look at FirstUnion's Airmiles Plus card for $75. This card earns you 1.2 miles per dollar charges.
Personally, I am going back to the Starwood American Express Card for $30. Starwood is the parent company of Westin and Sheraton. The card allows you to earn points in their frequent stay program. They have many different redemption options--hotel rooms, car rental vouchers, and gift certificates for various merchants. They also allow you to transfer your points on a 1:1 basis into just about every major frequent flyer program. They also give you a 5,000 mile bonus if you transfer 20,000 miles. In other words, if you transfer 20,000 points, they turn it into 25,000.
