If your automatic payment was taken out of your checking account, or billed to your credit card, on the 20th, that does not necessarily mean that it was received by the payee on the 20th. Most places claim that it takes 2-3 days for an e-payment to go through. Do not wait until the due date to make a payment. This almost always will get you into trouble.

Paid on the due date is usually late.

But some cards say you can get credit if it is sent by you (ON-LINE) before 1pm EASTERN.

Better yet, don't wait till you get your bill in the mail.
Get online access to your credit card account. Then monitor it closely. When a payment due shows up "online", then e-pay them immediately. It is pretty hard for the them to gouge you then. You can never give them a clean shot.

If you wait till you get your bill in the mail, someday it might not show up for some reason. If you overlook your monthly payment because of this - the credit card companies see it as no excuse. You will get charged a late fee and high APR penalty rate.
