Let's build a list of card issuers who call up the employer when you apply for their CC and another list for who do not call up. As a work phone number I always give them my cellphone number this is how I know. My list is the following:

No calls to employer:

CHASE
ORCHARD BANK
BANK OF AMERICA
CAPITALONE
CROSSCOUNTRY BANK (new name APPLIED CARD BANK)

Calls up the employer:

AMEX

I do the same thing - my cell phone as my work number and no one has ever called it. I have applied with:

AMEX
MBNA
GM
BofA
Chase
Capital One

In fact now that I think about I dont think I have ever had any credit company call to verify my income. I even just refinanced my car and applied with a couple dif companyes and no one called. I wonder if maybe something triggers them to call? Perhaps they call to verify if your credit score is of a certain number or something is missing from your credit report (mine shows the name of my work)?
