I was recently turned down for the "November Featured Card" Citi Dividends Reward card on the grounds that I don't "have no revolving accounts with a balance". My FICO is ~ low 700s, I have 50K in loans currently being repaid and all in good standing with no late payments and no negative history on my credit report.
What is the best card to start out with (unsecured) that also gives you auto rental coverage, zero liability, and allows online payments?

Are you a student by chance? If so a lot of issuers have student cards and some even have Platinum student cards (with the benefits you asked about) that are much easier to get.

Do a search on google, type this in:
"credit card" AND "auto rental coverage" AND "zero liability"
...and see what you can find.
Be aware that your 2 requirements don't really go well for a
"newbie" credit card (which starts off with a low limit). Because
those those benefits (especially the first) usually come as a
standard with higher class cards.
By the way, if you didn't know... car rental insurance doesn't cover
injury liability or damage to another person's car or property. And it
will be secondary coverage to your regular auto insurance policy. It
will for example reimburse you for your auto insurance deductible.

I'm not a student; having recently graduated a year ago. What would be a good, solid card to start out with that I wouldn't be excluded from due to the fact that I don't have an exisiting credit card? Of those three requirements I listed, really the most important is online payment ability and zero liability protection.

as a follow up to that, given that I have loans with good repayment history and no negatives on my credit report, what cards would I have a shot at getting approved for? Do I need to resort to a store card, or would I be able to obtain a no-frills (nonreward) standard unsecured card?

righthusk,
Greetings and welcome to the board! Sorry to hear about your decline. You might want to also try a gas card. Also Orchard Bank has unsecured cards that you would likely be approved for. Let us know how things turn out!
Out of curiosity, how did you find out about our website?

(Alexis I found out about the site from bankrate.com, I believe)
Anyway, thanks for the replies: two quesitons:
1) Is a Discover card a very easy unsecured card to obtain? Would this be a good option for somebody in my shoes?
2) When you say "gas card", are you talking only about the proprietary cards for companies like Shell and Mobil? Do these cards also function as normal credit cards or do they only work at that particular station?

I think he meant cards specific to a company like a Conoco or Shell card. Most of these cards are only accepted at a limited number of locations. Some companies like Sinclair or Conoco have cards that are supported by Visa or Mastercard and can be used anywhere those cards are accepted.
