Hello,
Will anyone please share their experiences (pros and cons)of applying for credit cards online? I haven't tried this way of applying for a credit card yet because I have been a little weary of submitting personal information online.
Anyway, if a person is approved is he/she provided with a temporary account number until a credit card arrives by mail? Is a decision made as quickly as it says online(some instances it states 30 seconds). How can a decision be made so quickly as opposed to mailing in the application?
Thank you for any information that you can provide for me. I will greatly appreciate it.

Sandra,
My only experience applying online was with a preapproval I got in the mail. I went to the website, filled out the application, and had my approval and credit limit in less than a minute. But the card took about ten days to arrive and needed to be activated from my home phone.
If you apply without a preapproval, be fairly certain you will be approved or you just generate a needless inquiry. (Every time you apply the lender checks your credit report and this is called an inquiry. Too many inquires will hurt your credit score and scare away other lenders)
As far as security goes, I like to install the latest window's updates and browser version as they become available. I also installed Spybot to remove and immunize my computer from spyware. But I'm sure there's a lot more you can do to make surfing the net safer. I'm still looking for a good Virus Protection program. The ones I have just slow my buggy and/or lightning-stricken computers to a crawl.
