Post subject: acceptance of different credit cards

How much more widely is American Express accepted, compared to Discover?

I am thinking about getting a cash back card, and Discover looks better for my annual purchase amount, especially with their promo 0% rate, but Amex might be better, because it is accepted at more locations, so my cash back might be more…

Also, does anybody know of a good V/MC cash back card? (That would be an ultimate solution to the acceptance problem.)

Oh, and I am not interested in any other rewards, and not with selected merchants, but with all the purchases I make at every location.

Thanks.

Eugene.

Eugene,

The latest stats I have ran across are from 1997 and, at that time, Discover had the edge as follows:

In 1997, American Express accounted for approximately 18% of dollar volume and 5% of general purpose cards issued in the United States. Cards on the American Express
network were accepted at approximately 2.5 million merchant outlets in the United States.

In 1997, Discover/Novus accounted for approximately 6% of dollar volume and 8.5% of general purpose cards issued in the United States. Cards on the Novus network were accepted
at approximately 3.1 million merchant outlets in the United States.

You might find more stats by visiting…

It should be noted that Discover is the largest independent credit card network in the U.S. and they claim to be adding around 1,000 new merchants each day (according to their website). You may find statistics regarding acceptance by visiting the following websites:

There are a few Visa/MC cash back cards that are attractive…the Fleet and Earthlink card for example. Take a look at our “Reward Cards Report” by clicking on “Card Reports” from our home page and then clicking on “Cash Back Rewards”.

Hope this helps and thanks for your continued posts!
