Post subject: Great credit, can't get credit card

For over 30 years,I have always said I would never get a credit card. We have always paid in cash.At this time we own a 35 acre farm (paid in full) and don't owe anyone anything.Over the years we have gotten at least 2 to 3 credit card offers for up to $50,000.00. We just decided last week we really should have a credit card in case of emergies. I go to the first on line credit card offer and fill out the form.(which is set up for people with bad or no credit).Which I didn't know at the time. But I answered the questions as best I could. The questions that didn't apply,I had to leave blank or in the case where they wanted a dollar amount owed I'd put the truth 00.00. So I submit it and get a e-mail telling me my credit was so bad, by the information I had suppied on the form that I wouldn't be able to get a credit card for 7 years. And then had the nerve to refer me to a lawyer to try to get my credit straightened out.So my question is why can't people who have never had a credit card with perfect credit, get a credit card? We have never even had a returned check. Any body got a suggestion.

The reason, it seems to me, that the credit card companies only give credit to those with a questionable credit history in order to make money on those individuals. You have such an excellent credit that they would not make money giving you credit. I suspect that you would do better applying with a card associated with your personal banker.
Good luck.

You didn't mention whether you had checked your credit report. If you haven't, it would be a good place to start. If there is nothing derogatory on it, then it was probably the ad you "clicked on". There are some "credit repair" companies that might be sleazy enough to try to get customers this way. It could also be the manner in which you filled out the form.

Check your credit report. Also, if you didn't establish credit before, you won't get a card now as creditors want to see a history of using cards and payment patterns. I also didn't want credit cards and paid cash always. I got a few cards as Authorized user on my wife's accounts. I was denied a card when I applied to get my own as I didn't have any revolving cards in my own name! I thought it is outrageous because, we have high six figures income with a mortgage only as debt. But the bank said I must have a history. I would suggest that you ask you credit union or bank to give you a card. They sure know you well. Don't go clicking on internet ads. Once you established an account and kept good payment history, you could apply and get more cards.

Yes first check your reports and see if there is anything on them. What card and site did you go to?? You said you always paid cash, sometimes not having a credit history of credit cards can also be just as damaging as having bad credit. I know that is totally unfair but that is how some banks and creditors view it:( I agree with Steve, ask your bank or credit union for a card.
