Post subject: legalities on credit card purchase?

Niece recently purchased a table from Montgomery Ward. They placed the $700.00 on her MW charge card. Weeks follow and she is notified they no longer can get this item, and if she would like to check the store for something else. She does but nothing suits her decor, so she asked them to credit her charge. She is told she can have store credit only, no credit to her account… Her purchase was made prior to the supposed closing of MW. In any event can they legally force her to pay this amount being she never received merchandise? This sounds absurd.
She is fearful of ruining her credit rating being a new married girl. Would her refusal to pay cost, cost her the valued good rating? Responses would be appreciated.

She needs to initiate a transaction dispute with the card issuer as soon as possible. Legally, her rights can be preserved only if she disputes the charge within 60 days after the statement date. She needs to WRITE to the card company, explain that the merchandise was paid for but never delivered, they will investigate and, hopefully, give her her money back. Call the issuer for more details on how to dispute a transaction.

I would say she has a VERY good chance of reversing that transaction.

Eugene.
