I found you all through Yahoo! and thought you might be able to answer a
question about a company I recently encountered with very suspect sales
techniques.
Have you heard of National Credit Card Security based in Hamilton, Bermuda?
They recently called me offering a deal on a credit card security package
which I refused, I asked only that they send me information on their service
and then I would make a decision on whether or not to use them. Sure
enough, on my next statement a charge on $249 appeared from them. In my
mind this is absolutely inconceivable. I even sent them a letter telling
them not to charge me for anything. Can you help me track them down? Is
there action I can take against them beyond just getting my credit card
company to reject the charge? I would love to take any action I can to make
sure this company isn't taking advantage of more unsuspecting folks.
If you cannot help me, do you know of an organization that can? I
appreciate your time and service.

Jill,
Sounds like a classical scam operation! The truth of the matter is that Visa has recently announced a new fraud policy, whereby cardholders are not responsible for ANY (i.e. 100%) credit card charges that are fradulent in nature (consumers are also limited to $50 in liablility by federal regulations).
Unfortunately, since they are located in Bermuda, there is probably little you can do about this. You may want
to complain to the Federal Trade Commission, though (http://www.ftc.gov). They have an online complaint
form. Has your credit card company agreed to cancel the charge?
Hope this helps. We will soon post a warning on our "Card Scams" page.

Jackie Hughes

I just got the same call. I declined giving them my card number, and they told me to call an 800 number to verfy their organization. Instead, I came on-line to see if the company is legit. It was "National Credit Card Security", and the guy is supposed to call me back. I'll call him out on it.

If this is the same crew that called me yesterday, they are still dialing for dollars.
Nadia from the "National Credit Card Security Department from (or for; I wish I had a tape) Visa/Mastercard." A new toll-free number to call to report fraud, going to send something by mail to put on the back of my card, my new code being the last digits of my phone number......
When I asked why they were calling me rather than my issuing bank and why they were calling when they were going to send something in the mail, I received no answer, just a repeat of the first 5 minutes and a statement of "understanding" about why I was reluctant to give out any info on the phone. When dear Nadia mentioned "verification", that was enough.
Pretty good. If not a flat out false statement about being part of Visa/Mastercard, then an awfully strong implication. And in 10-15 minutes, not a mention that they were selling something.

Did you give them your credit card number? That's always a scam. It happened to me, and from what I understand merely giving the number can be an agreement to a sale! I was merely "requesting more information" as well. I was pissed. I read up on the Fair Credit Billing Act. I sent letters to the company (return receipt requested) explaining in no uncertain terms that there was no sale. I disputed the charge with the credit card company. I spoke with a lawyer. I contacted the Attorney Generals' offices of both Minnesota (where I live) and Florida (where they were located). I sent letters to the Federal Trade Comission, the Better Business Bureau and KMSP's Consumer Action. And after all that, I got lucky, and I stress the word lucky. It seems merely three days after my so called "purchase" the Federal Trade Comission had frozen the companys assets. So the second time I disputed it, this company was not able to reinstate the charge. Ha. So what I'm trying to say here is, get your rear in gear. It is a no slack, learn you rights right now type of situation. And best of luck.

These guys have been trying me for days now. The caller ID on my phone has them working out of Ontario Canada. Here's the number.
416-935-1242, also 1254, and 1250.
Maybe we should set up a war dialer to dial all their numbers.

They didn't ask directly for my Visa card number, but they told me to turn over my card and explained to me exactly where I should put the security sticker. Then they asked me to read the number listed on the signature portion on the back of my card. BIG RED FLAG! A lot of people may not realize that this number *is* their card number and expiration date. I refused and they gave me this song and dance about how they couldn't charge my card unless authorized. BIG LIE! I ended the call but I'll breathe easier when I receive my next statement. I'm probably paranoid, but they already had my address and phone number, and I wonder what else they knew.

My household has gotten 3 calls from the National Credit Card Security people in the past three days (here's the number as it shows up on the ID: 905-272-8748). The first time, no one was home to take the call. The second, they asked for my father, and tried to get him to give a credit card number. He refused, and simply requested more information. This morning, they called back asking for my mother. These people are pretty relentless, huh?

Jill; It appears that you revealed your credit number and expiration date. Why would you do that in the first place, and what reason?
You authorized that charge the moment you released information about your credit card!!!
Simply state that you want them to send information, and then make a decision.
My organization reimburses people who get ripped off, or what we feel we can do for those who cannot.

Here's what happened to me. I got an email from a porn site that said at the top "type Remove from mailing list to stop receiving email from this site." Without reading the rest of the email, I typed "Remove from mailing list" in the subject area, and hit reply. No problem, right? Wrong-after getting a credit card bill with a huge charge on it, that I had no idea got there, I called my credit card company and they reduced what I owed to 50 bucks. That was a lot better, but still 50 bucks of my money for something I never received! After a lot of searching on the 'net to see how I could avoid other such charges, I learned of a scam where sites put that statement "type Remove from mailing list to stop receiving email from this site", but at the bottom of the email, it says that typing that ensures you will no longer receive email from that site, but it also says that statement gives them full authority to charge your credit card for some service! WHAT?! HOW CAN THEY DO THAT?! The charge was for membership to their porn site, but what I don't understand, is how did they get my credit card number to begin with?

National Credit Card Security Legal Care Corporation has several web sites. One is www.national-card.com, which appears to be unavailable. A WHOIS search from www.networksolutions.com shows that www.national-card.com is registered to:
Shiell, Allan (ASK700) allan@STFGROUP.COM
STF Consulting Group
68 Scolland St.
Toronto, ON M5R 1G2

416-924-2759 (FAX) 416-924-8066
STF ("Start To Finish") Group is supposedly a legal consulting group. Their 877 number is the same as the one for National Credit Card Security. They have a website at www.stfgroup.com. The domain is registered to:
Sheill, Julian (JS29646) julian@TCN.NET
Start to Finish Consulting
4864 Yonge Street Suite 200
Toronto, ON M2N-5N2
CA
416-229-1922 (FAX) 416-229-1910
Browsing through their automated phone directory indicates that there are approximately 5 employees at this company, including Allan and Julian Sheill, along with someone named "Lauren" who sounded a lot like the lady who called asking for a credit card number. Allan's extension is 222, which is also the same extension for "Customer Service"
I hope this information will be useful to someone.
