Post subject: Fleet Credit Card is the Worst!

We answered an ad for a low, 3% credit card from a company called
“Advanta”. Within 4 months they sold our account to Fleet Credit Card
Services and it became a 27% rate. We have been charged $60. a month in
fees on a $3,000 balance. We took out another loan to pay them off, and
they charged us $300. service charge for that. Avoid this company at
all costs.

My wife had a similar (except even worse) experience with Advanta selling an account to Fleet. Take Bill’s advice, and stay away from Advanta and Fleet.

Here Here!

We had a Crestar Visa for years at 13%, which was sold to Fleet. They subsequently raised our interest rate to 27.99% and 28% on cash advances. So much for customer loyalty. My advice is to dump Fleet and don’t ever go back — regardless of their tricky offers.

I had a Fleet Platinum MC for 14 years (through 2 other banks, ended up at Fleet through mergers). They recently started a $35/yr fee (was $0). I called and tried to get them to waive it, even willing to raise the interest rate from the 9.9% They said there was nothing else they could offer me, so I canceled it. I found this site while looking for a new CC to replace it, and lo and behold, I linked to Fleet’s site and see 2 Platinum MC’s listed, both with no annual fee! (one is 9.9% fixed, other 10.5% variable). I just called them again to see why I couldn’t have been offered a switch to one of those and was basically told that because I rarely carried a monthly balance, they added the fee to my card. Forget the fact that I probably charged an average of $300-$500 a month on the card, from which they made $ off of each transaction. So just be aware, don’t open a Fleet account with thier “No annual Fee” BS, unless you give them lots of $ interest, there will be a fee eventually.

Welcome to the club. I’ve just had a negative experience of my own related to Fleet and the new $35.00 fee. What a bunch of miserable, lying crooks! When I was informed of the fee, I sent in, along with a check completely paying off my balance, a letter IMMEDIATELY cancelling my account. Their reasons for instituting the fee are bogus (”responding to Federal Reserve interest increases,” indeed!). However, lo and behold, they’re charging me the fee RETROACTIVELY on a July statement — even though my card has expired and my account has been cancelled. Fleet seems to be trying to get their cardholders to use credit more frequently — the REAL reason for the $35.00 fee. I feel that large credit card charges should be only used as a last resort. The frequent use of cards which Fleet is trying to initiate by means of their new fee will only lead to financial difficulty for many customers. A great situation FOR THEM. Thanks to empowerment by the Internet, I plan to make a mission out of dissuading potential customers away from Fleet. Their advertized low interest rate is intended as a leader for suckers (which unfortunately now includes me). Good luck to you.

P.S. If anybody reading this knows a regulatory agency for this sort of thing, please send me an e-mail. Thanks.

PLEASE READ MY REPLY TO THIS POST WHICH SOME HOW CAME OUT SEPARATELY ON ANOTHER PAGE. AVOID FLEET AT ALL COSTS!! DO NOT BE TAKEN IN BY WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LOW ANNUAL INTEREST RATE! THIS COMPANY REPRESENTS THE CREDIT CARD “INDUSTRY” AT ITS ABSOLUTE WORST! I KNOW YOU DON’T KNOW ME FROM ADAM, BUT PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! (I HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN FROM THIS OTHER THAN THE SATISFACTION OF SAVING PEOPLE FROM THE GRIEF I HAVE BEEN THROUGH)!

You have my heartfelt sympathy and I understand your
frustration and anger.
I was talked into accepting a free three month trial of credit protection insurance
by those weasels. My next statement reflected a charge for the insurance, so I called
and had it cancelled. The next statement showed an increase in the APR to 27.77%, 29.77% on cash advances,
with a corresponding increase in the minimum payment. I called and asked if the rate
had been increased because I cancelled the insurance and was told that was not the
reason. When I asked what the reason was, they said they could not give that
information out over the phone (even though they can give out every other detail of
your account over the phone) and would send a letter of explanation. When the letter
eventually came (it took two months), all that was there was a photocopy of the rate
increase notice. I called and asked again the reason for the rate increase and was
told it was an insurance matter and was transferred to that company who in turn said
to call Fleet (ring-around-the-rosey!). My next statement reflected an increase of
$25 in the minimum payment. I’m afraid that if I press the matter any further, they’ll
start claiming that they’re not receiving my payments, or something worse. They are
the vilest most despicable legal loan-sharkers on the planet, and I have a feeling
there is not a damned thing anyone can do about it.
