My husband had a credit card with Cross Country. In late November we
received a statement showing a balance of around $650.00 and a payment of
$35.00 “DUE NOW” We called to verify the balance on the account. We sent a
check for the full amount of the balance on the statement which was verified
and requested that the account be closed when the payment was posted. The
next statement we received shoed that the payment was posted on 12/9/99, the
account was closed on 12/10/99 and a “LATE FEE” of $35.00 on 12/23/00. They
charged us a late fee along with interest on an account that had been paid
in full and was closed.

Cross Country has sent us numerous statements - with each one charging us
more late fees and interest. We have called them on several occasions
trying to resolve the matter. In March we wrote a “dispute letter”
detailing the above along with attachments. They sent a response that we
owe the money - but gave us no explanation. They have been reporting bad
credit information to the credit bureaus since Jan.

Does anyone have any idea of what is the next step to resolve this matter? Do we need
to get a lawyer? Do we need to report them to the Better Business Bureau?

To Whom It May Concern:

I recently have experienced a similiar situation with
Cross Country Bank as well. I made the fatal mistake of
opening an account with them in June of 1999. The total
purchase amount was $414.33. Credit limit was $600.
Unfortunately for me they put $150 app fee, $10.00 express
charge & also caused a merchant ck to be returned against
the account 2 times & charged me another $75 in fees along
with interest. The first correspondence I received from
this financial lending institution was a nasty over the
limit letter and it was all their fees which caused the
over limit balance. How do you fight it? First thing you
do is you file complaint with better business bureau. Write
a letter to all 3 major credit reporting agencies that you
dispute the repoting of this credit card on your file with
an explanation as to why and they will place it directly in
your file for all other lending companies to read. I have
repaid this company $920 and have askd for the account to
be settled in full. No one in that bank has the authority
to make the decision. I am now in the process of writing a
letter to the CEO: Meryl Beard/P.O. BOX 310748/Boca Raton
FL/33431-0748. I intend to fight for all consumers who may
be under this same type of scam. I have been in banking for
almost 12 years and have never seen this type of leadership
failure in my years of experience. Don’t give up. I refuse
to pay this company anymore money. The National Banking
commission could use letters as well.

Thanks,
Ann Keathley

Post subject: Cross Country- The Worst Card Co.!

To whom this may concern, I had an awful experience with cross country bank
visa card. They have to be the worst company going. I got a bank loan paid
off my card in full with a deal they wouldn’t charge me the annual fee. Well,
a year later I was still fighting with them about it. I ended up paying them
the annual fee plus all the late charges and interest on top of it. I also
told them to close my account after that and they never seemed to do it. Now
on top of all the problems they gave me trans union says I have bad credit.
they are just and awful company and I wouldn’t advise them to anyone. I let
them know what I thought of them too. Thank you Hope you can spread the word.

I had a card with them for 2 years, then I stopped receiving bills. I
advised rep I would not pay until I received a bill. I wrote a letter
when I didn’t receive a bill and got a response right away, but received
a statement 6 months later only showing total due of $1000 from a $500
credit limit. Have had no success with getting cooperation from anyone
at this place.

Jonny,

Thanks for your recent feedback. You are not the only one that has felt like they have been deceived by Cross Country. There have been many, many complaints about them. For a sampling, visit the message board at creditnet and search for cross country…

http://www.board.creditnet.com

I would definitely consider reporting this situation to the authorities.

Hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear of your trouble with Cross Country Bank. But, thanks to many other people like you posting their experiences with this bank, I have decided NOT to send in the application I received from CCB. I have lost count of how many horror stories I’ve read concerning the very questionable practices of Cross Country Bank. So, my sincere thanks to you and the other unfortunate souls who have warned me away from certain trouble. And I wish all good luck and go sue them, nailing thier hides to the wall!!

Here is a message I sent out to a number of the Internet contacts that
have been helping us.

RE: CCB Class Action Lawsuit

I wanted to thank you for your input and help. Finally, I can advise
you
we have filed a class action lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida (at
Boco Raton) against Cross Country Bank and naming Applied Card
Systems,
Experian, and Trans Union LLC’s as co-conspirators. The lawsuit is
Cutshall
v. Cross Country Bank, Case No.00-8670-Civ-Ryskamp. The last
notation after
Civ is the name of the Judge. The suit was filed July 21, 2000.

The lawsuit makes five claims: 1) violation of RICO, 18 U.S.C. 1962(d),
charging a pattern of racketeering activities; 2) conspiracy to violate
RICO,
18 U.S.C. 1862 (c); 3) violation of the Truth in Lending Act; 4) violation
of Consumer Protection Statutes; and 5) common law fraud.

On each of the claims, the plaintiffs ask for damages of not less than
$50 million as well punitive damages to be determined at trial. Trebling
of
the actual damages may be appropriate for punitive damages.

The lawsuit is now on file and seeks substantial damages to punish
CCB
for its past behavior and force it to comply with the law.

Cross Country Bank is an absolute nightmare to do business with. Posting payments weeks after they are mailed, losing payments, multiple billing errors that are never corrected - all these are routine practices. Add customer service that’s rude, abusive, and unhelpful and Cross Country demonstrates its utter contempt for customers. No one is so desperate for credit to subject themselves to the incredibly expensive and humiliating Cross Country experience. Their horrible reputation is well deserved.

Just some food for thought!
