I have a "YAHOO" visa card issued through First USA. I have had the card 11
months and have excellent credit. The card is due to expire 4/30/00 (yes, in
two days!) and I just found out from First USA that they will not be
re-newing my account. The ONLY way I found this out was because I called
them yesterday looking for a new card! Also, they will not tell me why they
are not re-newing my account. Can they do this to me, terminate my account
without ANY notice!?? Representatives I speak with there confirm no notice
was given, and cant answer why! This is the only card my wife and I use, and
I have several places that receive payment automatically from me by debiting
my card. I am in trouble with places looking for payment if my card is
terminated. CAN FIRST USA DO THIS TO ME, CUT ME OFF WITHOUT EVEN LETTING ME
KNOW?? I AM LIVID OVER THIS!

Johnny,
Thanks for your recent inquiry! This situation sounds peculiar. Credit card
issuers do not cancel accounts unless they have a justifiable reason to do
so. Did you may all your payments promptly?
In answer to your question...while there may be exceptions because each
state has their own laws governing credit, generally speaking a credit card
issuer can cancel your account without prior notice. I would suggest
contacting the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov) and your local
consumer protection office. Please bear in mind that FirstUSA is based in
Delaware...and is therefore subject to Delware law. Also, have you reviewed
the cardholder agreement that FirstUSA mailed to you when you opened your
account?
Hope this helps!
