Beware of American Express. I had an Optina business card for approx 4
years. American Express changed my address to some out of town post office
box in a state I have never lived in. I discovered problem after not
receiving a bill for two months and calling them. They refuse to explain
how the mistake happened, they have refused to send detailed charges made
to the account, I have called 4 times, sent two letters and two emails and
they
still do not respond. Finally, they have their collection department
calling for
the delinquent charges they have applied.
Does anyone know of a state agency I can report them to? They don’t even
respond to the Better Business Bureau. They think they are too big..

Thanks for your recent feedback/inquiry! I am surprised to hear of your difficulties with AmEx. They have a stellar reputation,
particulary in regards to customer service (you’re the first person to complain about them to our site). At any rate, there is a couple of governmental agenices on the federal level you can complain to. Try the following links..

Hope this helps!

I also had a BAD experience with both American Express Card and Optima Card. We had been members for many years, in fact, the American Express card was the first credit card we ever had. After we had reported our cards stolen in 1994, I had disputed substantial charges and they did not follow through properly to get them reversed. I refused to pay them since I had done everything correct pursuant to law. They sent me to collections and I fought and fought with collection agency after collection agency (after I told my story to one collection agency and they dropped the account, AmEx sent it to another agency. This went on for years. I still am afraid that I will get another call or notice. (Also, they violated my request for no phone contact) I have kept all of the paperwork which clearly shows I was correct, and I won’t ever throw that paperwork away! I’m thinking I should get a safety deposit box to put the paperwork in, just in case!!! I will never do business with them again.

I would like to know if I am qualified for an American Express Card, based on the fact that I was discharged from bankruptcy some 12 years ago.
Does anyone know about American Express Internal Standard? How long they keep a negative record in thir files? I have a very good credit right now, and my Credit Report is also clear. Thank you.

Mike,
I am not sure about AmEx’s internal approval guidelines (maybe someone else can shed some light on this), but I don’t think you would have any problem at least being approved for the secured Optima card. Please be advised, though, that this card does NOT report to the major credit bureaus (you can find more info. regarding this card on thd “Poor Credit” section of our site). If you use the secured Optima card responsibly, then AmEx will consider granting you unsecured status after 12 months.
Hope this helps!
