Post subject: Account in collections?

About 2 years ago I closed an account with M&T bank. Before I closed it I made sure that I had no debts and there were no problems closing it. A week ago I got a call from a collections agency that apparently says I owe $150 on that account. The problem is I have no documentation and M&T says they can’t check records that far back for free. A little worried, I asked the collections agent whether there would be a notation made on my credit report if I didn’t pay, and he said there would not be because the amount was so small. This kind of surprised me as it took out all incentive for me to make a payment. So my questions are: Is it true that no notation is made for amounts that small? Is it possible that this is a scam? Any suggestion on the next course of action? Thanks you in advance for any responses.

I would contact the bank manager and ask for my records.
