Post subject: MBNA Unilateraly "Upgrading" Quantum MC to AMEX?
So I've had an MBNA Quantum Mastercard for five years or so. Yesterday I get a shiny new "MBNA American Express" in the mail. Somewhat puzzled, not having applied for any new cards, I call them. They claim it's an "upgrade" from my Quantum and that they sent out a notice that said I would have to call them to stop it from happening. Maybe they did; I probably trashed it along with the pile of credit card junk mail I get every day. Isn't it a bit weird to just unilateraly change the type of card that one has (MC to AMEX)? I've been upgraded before but I got to approve it and never has anyone tried to change the type of card. If I had wanted an AMEX I would have applied for an AMEX. It's kind of annoying that they just decide to do it unless I stop them. They did offer to "downgrade" me back to Quantum but my acct number will change no matter what. A pain since I had a couple of automatic transactions tied to the old number. What's this baloney about "upgrade"? The limit is the same, features look the same, so as a wise man once asked, "Where's the Beef?" Anyone in a position to compare these two cards? I don't see the "MBNA American Express" on the CardOffers.com database. Is it really any better than a Quantum? Anyone have any guesses what MBNA is up to? Did they get some sweet incentive from AMEX to convert people over? I've already relegated my new AMEX to the fire safe where it will collect dust. The auto-transfers will be moved not to the new AMEX account number but to a non-MBNA card. Related question: Since I'm now in the market for a MasterCard, again, what's a good one? How's the "Citi Dividend Platinum Select MasterCard"? Is Citi worse/better than MBNA? Does Citi have a good web site for making payments, compared to that of, say, Discover?

This is a new marketing arrangement between Amex and MBNA, the first of its kind.

There were 3 ways that the american express/MBNA card was going to be offered 1 Opt Out ( this is what you received, you had to send the letter back stating that you did not want it) 2. Opt in.. This is where you send an offer in that your received 3. NO choice.. It was an agreement between MBNA and American Express and the Customer had no choice.. You can still get your old card back, Just call MBNA (800-421-2110) , ask to be transferred to the PCU ( product change unit) and they can start the process to get your MC or VIsa back instead of the American express.. Good luck

Thanks for the info. I would have rather had Opt In instead of Opt Out. They did offer to "downgrade" (their words) me back to Quantum MC but the account number changes no matter what, according to MBNA. Annoying with auto-transactions tied to the other number. Oh well, too many cradit cards out there to putz around with one foolish company. If they mess up, too bad for them.

MBNA QUANTUM to MBNA AMEX is not an "UP-GRADE" in my opinion ...and they better NOT change my QUANTUM with-out my written permission!!!

So Alex, How did MBNA decide who would get what kind of offer? I got an opt-in offer to upgrade my Quantum card to Amex. But I already have an Amex card so have little use for another one. I have the Quantum Mastercard because it's a Mastercard(!) and I can use it at places where Amex is not accepted. I hope MBNA would think about things like that.

My mom had the Platinum Select from MBNA. About a month or two ago they sent her a letter that said that they would upgrade her Platinum Select to the new MBNA Amex w/World Rewards. I told her to do it since she had good credit and also doesn't use credit cards a lot. I believe though that it would be a downgrade from a Quantum card. It doesn't have all of the concierge and private shoppers of the Quantum. Now if they upgraded you to the Centurion by Amex, then that I think would be an Upgrade

Hehe, the Centurion would be cool until I had to pay that astounding annual fee. Yikes! This MBNA thing already caused me trouble. I was travelling over Thanksgiving and found myself stuck with a Discover and the MBNA Amex in a place that took neither. That's why I had the MasterCard in the first place! Oh well, the MBNA card's replacement, a Citi Dividend MasterCard just arrived so I'm good to go. This thing has better cashback than the Discover so I may just start using it as my primary card now.
