Post subject: Bank One BP VISA inactive card....incentives to start using

In early 2003 Bank One's BP VISA offered 6% cash back on BP gas purchases and 2% on everything else for the first two billing cycles, then 3%/1% thereafter. The rebates are in the form of $20 gift cards at BP/Amoco stations. There is no annual fee and the typical grace period. My wife and I each signed up for the card and used them for the first two billing cycles, then put them away. Late summer 2004 we each got a different offer to start using our cards again. My offer was a $20 BP Cash Card for each $500 in charges made in August and September, up to a maximum of 5 Cash Cards ($2500 in charges), in addition to the normal 3%/1% accrual. I charged over $2500 and indeed got the 5 Cash Cards promised. I have since switched to a better deal rewards card. My wife's offer was double the rebate (2% vs 1%) on charges designated as dining, utilities, wireless services, home improvement, video rentals, groceries, dry cleaning, drug stores and movies/refreshments. Offer is good from July 1 2004 to June 30, 2005. We are still using this card, so their incentive plan worked on one of the two cards. I still have both letters announcing the incentives. sammy262

I had that card and thought the incentives were a good idea--until I tried using the BP $20 cards that arrived. I'm in California and there was only one BP station within 50 miles of me--and it refused to accept the card. Turned out that the independently-owned BP stations had the right to decline the card; only the corporate stations were obligated to accept them. I wound up auctioning the cards off on eBay. Got $12 each for them at the time.
