Credit Tips: Should I have an ATM card and a debit card?

Post subject: Debit Card Daily Spending Limit
I have a debit card (VISA logo) with a $3000 daily spending limit. I hardly ever use the card for more than ATM withdrawals. If I ask the bank to reduce the daily spending limit for signature purchases to $500, will this help in case the card is lost or stolen? (Then a thief would get cut off after $500)? Or should I just get an ATM card and get rid of the debit card?
