Credit Card Account Charge Dispute

Post subject: Disputing a charge

I am currently disputing a charge on my Sears Gold MasterCard for the amount of $26.75. The reason I am disputing the charge is because I returned something to the store and the company never credited my card and the company is refusing to help me. My question is, am I suppose to recieve a temporary credit while this problem is being looked into, or do I just pay the credit card bill and subtract the $26.75 from the total. I talked to Sears and they said that they can't issue me a temporary credit and if I pay my credit card bill minus the $26.75 I will have finance charges and the only way they will take it off is if I win the dispute. If I don't win the dispute I will have to pay the finance charges. Is this correct and I should just subtract the amount in dispute and hope I win to avoid the finance charges?
