Post subject: Advice for a college student

Great site! It’s been really helpful.

I’m currently enrolled as a full-time student (a junior… almost there!). I don’t have a job as my class schedule is a little crazy and not really conducive to working. I do have student loans that pay for my tuition, books, etc. I know those count as “good” credit as far as my CR goes. I would like to get some sort of credit card so my credit expands beyond just the loans, though. I applied for a Citi student card last summer and was turned down because the were not able to verify my student status.

Do you know of any other cards I should apply for? Has it been long enough since the Citi app to apply with another company? Thanks a lot!

Assuming you’ll be paying your balance in full every month (and you should), then a couple of the better rewards cards for students are the Citi mtvU card and the Citi Driver’s Edge card.

However, to see which student card will pay you the most in rewards for your particular spending profile, check out the CreditCardTuneUp.com rewards calculator. The URL is in my signature. Be sure to check the radio button for the “College Student” credit card type.

Thanks I was wondering about the BOA or AMEX student cards. Since Citi turned me down last summer, I want to avoid them again. No sense in getting two marks from them on the same report! Is there an age cut-off for the student cards?
Thanks

As far as I know, most banks don’t have a cut-off age for student cards. If you are enrolled full-time, it often doesn’t matter what your age is.

If you’re older, however, and have a strong credit score, then you might get approved for a different card.

Just bear in mind that you’re not restricted to a student card. There is no rule that says students must have student cards.

If you have the CS you can apply for whatever you wish.
