Retail credit cards are growing in popularity, and while most retailers either manage the credit end of business through an in-house bank or a third-party, few have yet to partner with household names in the credit industry. That changed recently with a historic deal between American Express and GE Consumer Finance to offer co-branded credit cards in the United States. The first such offering is the American Express co-branded Dillard’s card.
The new Dillard’s American Express Card carries the American Express logo and offers its customers some distinct advantages; namely, the ability to utilize the card at any location accepting American Express while earning points for use at Dillard’s retail stores.

The alliance between American Express and GE Consumer Finance is part of American Express’ strategy to open its network to financial institutions in the U.S. GE Consumer Finance is the seventh U.S. partner for American Express.
“GE Consumer Finance is an ideal partner for American Express with their strong store-affiliated partners, commitment to rapid growth through innovative new products and programs, and devotion to excellent customer service,” said Barry Rodrigues, executive vice president of American Express’ Global Network Services. “We look forward to working closely with GE to deliver exceptional value to their retail partners and consumers.”
GE Consumer Finance, a global leader in retail credit card programs and other consumer lending services purchased the assets of Dillard National Bank, the private label credit card issuing bank of Dillard’s Inc., for approximately $1.25 billion in August 2004.
More American Express co-brand cards will follow, officials say. Additional details about the new Dillard’s American Express Card can be found by visiting the thread entitled I have some information about Dillard's... on our credit forum.
