A month or so ago, I applied for my first real credit card so I can finally start a credit history.
A Citicard Student Visa Platinum Select. So first I applied online, and a few weeks later they wanted me to send them information for verification (A student ID or Tuition Bill+Utility bill). They needed a student ID with an enrollment sticker, but my school doesn't use enrollment stickers, so I just included a copy of my student ID, and in addition I also put in my paid tuition bill that has my address. Yesterday, I get a letter from them telling me my application was not approved since they couldn't verify my address and phone number.
The thing is, that was completely it. The end. They didn't give any other information, no address for further inquiry, no requested information, nothing. Just you were not approved for the following reason: _______. That's it.
Someone suggested they probably didn't want my business, so I go and apply for a Amex Blue for Students (which a friend just got with no credit history).
"Your American Express Acquisition Risk Score is too high (See below)
Insufficient established credit."
So I'm guessing the fact that Citibank already started my credit report is making this a big no no?
My only choice is to go back to Citibank and hope they verify my information somehow? Is there a certain address or phone number that deals specifically with this?

I dont follow, either. They asked for a utility bill, but it doesnt sound like you sent one? I think they want your business, but they are just trying to verify your info.

American Express turned down my request for a card once because it couldn't verify my address. I had four other American Express cards--at the same address--at the time. And, yes, the letter telling me that went to the address it couldn't confirm!
Citibank told you it couldn't verify your address and phone number. Is the phone number listed in your name? Call and ask what more information is needed to verify what you siad--and provide that information.

check if your university have a credit card , in my case , my first credit card was actually from my university that i attended (MBNA Universidad de PR CAAM Alumni). Also if you have college loan in your credit reports it would be a lot easier to accept student credit cards.

dont try for student cards. The standards for those are higher. If you already have a store card - good, if not try there (macys, sears, etc..) Somethines w/ no credit - even those are a hassle - so i would suggest cards like first premier, or orchid bank. They have high fees, but if you use it for 3 mos - that will help you establish credit in your name.
your other option is to piggy back. use a parent w/ good credit and ask them if you could become an authorized user on their card. When they do that - you will gain the benefit of their good credit.
