I'm now officially a statistic! Some **** bought a 1600 computer system from dell UK with my amex card. Luckily I check my (extremely limited) finances almost daily and spotted it immediately. I called Amex and reported this.
Is there anything else I should do to help speed things?
I think I even know who stole the number ! This is a very new card, so only used a few times. Grocery store purchases are self-swiping so shouldn't be the problem. The fraudulent transaction was listed as a 2005-05-05 transaction. On 2005-05-03 I took a cab ride and instead of swiping it at the end, cab driver copied the number. I was rushing so didn't do anything, but I made a mental note to remember in case he charged a lot more...but the cab ride transaction posted fine. Just that days later this UK charge suddenly posted.
Ugh I hate evil people! Why not just work and actually earn your living instead of sponging off others? Grrrr!

Give AMEX all the information on the CAB you have...
("IF" you think that is the only place it could have happened)
AMEX SECURITY WILL INVESTIGATE ALL INFORMATION YOU GIVE THEM

Yep I think its reasonable to think that's one of the very few possible leaks. Thanks I've called Amex and they said they'd add a note to my file about the cab driver suspicion.
Not sure what else I can do except wait.
