I had just received the amex gold card yesterday and I'm wondering if the amex blue might actually be a better card. Which one is easier to get and is it possible for me to switch from gold to blue?

yes im aware of which one is the charge and credit card. But I've read from other posts that chrage cards don't really do anything for credit ratings since it doesn't display a limit (which btw I heard the no preset CL is bogus cus they really do set a limit for you without telling you and once you've charged up to it, they tell you to pay some of it off before anymore usage) . So why should I pay $90 a year to keep a card that won't help with my credit and possibly even make me look like I have a high utilization. On the other hand, the blue is free and has a credit limit.

I don't think its to do with charge cards or credit cards. This is just how Amex reports to the credit rating agencies. The main reason apparently is they don't want competitors to know how much credit they've granted to a customer--trade secret.

I have amex blue and it also doesn't give credit limit. Other people's solutions have been to charge it sky high one month, so you appear to have that upper bounds. Subsequently use it more gently, and your score will appear as though your limit was the upper bound one.

I personally prefer credit over charge so you don't have to worry about paying in full each month, especially when you can get 0% intro APR on some cards, and I believe the BLUE has that now

So I am now curious to hear opinions to the origional question...

should anasky switch?? I have the gold card currently, but have been offered the Plat through work for $150 fee. Since I am not looking to pay $280 in annual fees, I was wondering what the options were as well.

Just interested in the origional string.

That's interesting, I have an AMEX Blue and it is reporting the credit limit to all three bureaus.

Yeah that's what I had originally thought. How long have you had your amex blue? And would you rather have that or the gold?

I've had the AMEX Blue for three months. I was initially approved for a $2,000 credit line that has since been increased to $7,200.

I prefer the Blue to the Gold since you can carry a balance if need be on the Blue. This is important for me since I am self employed and my work is seasonal, I usually have ver slow months in July and August and need the flexibility of a credit card versus a charge card like the Gold card.

So far I've been very happy with AMEX. My only complaint is that it is not as widely accepted as Visa/MC, if it was, I wouldn't use any other card.

I would swap the Rewards Gold Card for the BLUE. Here's why.

Both the Rewards Gold Card (assume the one you have has a $90.00 annual fee) and the BLUE (no annual fee) have the same underlying reward program, which is Membership Rewards Options. This is a slightly watered down version of the full-blown Membership Rewards. With both cards, you can earn unlimited points which do not expire.

Since the Rewards Gold Card and Blue have the same reward program, the BLUE card actually makes more sense since it has no annual fee. Plus, it is a credit card, (if you need to carry a balance) and presently, there are a couple if low rate introductory offers - a 3.99% fixed apr on your balance transfer for the life of the balance and also a 0% apr on purchases anywhere from 6 to 15 months depending on your credit profile.

HOWEVER, if you the Gold card you have is the Preferred Rewards Gold Card (with a $130.00 annual fee), then the reward program is based on Membership Rewards, which is better than membership rewards options. With membership rewards, you convert points into miles with the program's airline partners at a conversion ratio is one-for-one for most airlines whereas it is one miles for every two points for membership rewards options. The shopping rewards and others is also more comprehensive under the full-blown membership rewards program.

If you have the Preferred Rewards Gold Card, the decision you have to make is whether the full blown membership rewards is worth the $130 annual fee versus no annual fee for the watered-down version membership rewards options. (plus the fact that the BLUE is a credit card, with low rate introductory apr offers).
