Fair Credit

By updated on May 21, 2013

Credit cards for those with fair credit.  A fair credit score can feel pretty unfair when you're searching for a credit card, but there are credit cards available for those who have a less than stellar average credit rating. With a little research and a thorough understanding of your credit report, you will be able to choose from credit cards that offer such things as travel rewards, cash back rewards and balance transfer offers.  Just be sure to compare rates and fees, so you know you are getting the best credit card available for fair credit.

Are there credit cards for those with fair credit?

Consumers with fair credit or those working to improve their credit report are still eligible to receive a number of credit cards, many of which are designed to assist those with lower credit rating scores. Rates and offers will differ depending on your credit score, so it pays to do your homework and compare what options are out there for you.

How can I be sure my credit rating is fair?

Credit bureau reports define a fair credit rating as one between 675-700. While each credit card company has its own criteria, to get an idea of your credit score, visit one of the 3 credit reporting agencies or numerous services to get a copy of your annual credit report. Remember, knowledge is power!

What can I expect in a credit card?

Credit cards for people with fair credit often offer cash back rewards, fraud protection and other bonuses just like prime credit cards. With a lower credit rating, most credit cards come with a higher interest rate and oftentimes an annual fee.  It is important to shop around for the card with the lowest fees and interest rate since they can vary considerably.

Is there anything I can do to make a fair credit card better for me?

Unfortunately, if you have fair credit, you won't get credit card offers as good as someone with higher scores, but that doesn't mean you don't have some bargaining options. While you work to improve your credit, you can take charge of your current card by following a few steps, including negotiating your annual fee. It's your credit future, so get involved and stay informed, and you'll be on your way to a higher credit score.
