American Express is a CardRatings.com advertiser.

There are actually any number of cards to fill your need especially for cash rebates. Even Shell has a rebate card that you might look into. Chase, American Express, Discover and PenFed currently offer cash back programs that include gas purchases paid at the pump at U.S. gas stations. Note that some cash back programs are based on quarterly rotating categories, so the bonus cash back category for gas purchases would be available only in select quarters, after enrollment. Be sure to check each issuer's website for terms and conditions, restrictions, limitations and quarterly spend caps that they may have on each offer before you apply. I would think the more important questions might be: What is the interest rate? Is there an annual fee? What is the default rate? Is there any introductory rate?

Your selection also has to do with limitations on any individual card. For example some cards may be 5 percent but limit you to the first $100 purchased in a month. Another might be at 3 percent but have unlimited rewards. In this case depending on your needs, the 3 percent may be your better deal.

My suggestion is to check out the gas rebate credit cards section on CardRatings.com before making your choice.  If you prefer a specific brand of gas, then you should also compare those offers to the credit card offered by your preferred brand.
