American Express announced on March 6 that cardholders will be able to "tweet their way" to special deals and discounts. To take advantage of this promotion, cardholders will first need to sync their eligible AmEx card with Twitter at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter. When a cardholder tweets using special merchant hashtags, discount coupons are loaded directly onto the synced card, bypassing the need for clipping or printing coupons.
American Express created an automated notification handle (@AmExsync) that is activated when someone sends a Tweet that includes one of the special offer hashtags. For example, including the #AmexCheesecake hashtag in a tweet would earn that cardholder a $10 statement credit if the cardholder spends a minimum of $50 in one of the Cheesecake Factory stores.
At launch, participating merchants included Best Buy, McDonald's, Sports Authority, Whole Foods Market, Zappos and more. All of the current American Express special offers are highlighted as "favorites" on the American Express Twitter page.
The credit card issuer's latest move is an effort to leverage technology as a way to reach younger consumers and promote spending on their cards.
"American Express is turning Twitter content into commerce by connecting Cardmembers to merchants and delivering real world value to both," said American Express vice chairman Ed Gilligan in a recent press release.
American Express will feature the new Twitter promotion during the YouTube live streaming of an upcoming concert by award-winning recording artist Jay Z at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, on March 12. Details of the AmEx Sync Show can be found at youtube.com/AmericanExpress. In addition to being broadcast live on YouTube, the show will also be available on VEVO, according to the American Express press release.
