Is Wife Liable for Credit Card Debt? I have filed bankruptcy, Chapter 7. The issuer of one of my credit cards that I had my wife's name on has assigned that card to her. And now she has that debt. However, it was never a joint card. And when I asked for them to send me the application, they said it was done electronically over the phone. I do not think I put her down as a joint applicant for this card, but how can I prove this? Read more >>

HOT TOPICS - Do you check for card skimmers?

A news report today reminded me to always check for card skimmers. I started doing this a few years ago but lately I've been a little lax in looking before I swipe my cards. I've seen pictures of many different versions of skimmers. A few of them would be very hard to notice with just a glance. Anyone else check for these before you swipe your card?

lkkksk, I am new to this board and would like to say you guys give information. I applied for the Northwest Airlines Visa card. I received a message stating that due to the information that I provided they needed to gather more information. I called and was transferred to new applications. I was told that my application was in the verifications department. I do have a fraud alert on my credit report. Is this a good sign for getting the card? Has anyone had to have information verified?

multiplierx, I wouldn't say it's a good sign but it's not a bad sign either. Most likely they requested that you verify due to the fraud alert on your report. Do you want the fraud alert? When applying, it'd be easier to remove the fraud alert beforehand.

mdocster, I know right now I don't have too many credit cards. I have 3, one with a credit union, one personal card with chase, and a chase business card. I also have a store account. I also have a mortgage. I've been thinking about applying for another card but am just wondering how many everybody thinks is too much. I have read some of the posts on here and it seems like a lot of you have quite a few cards, but I am also very concerned about keeping my credit score up as high as possible, and I know I've read that having too many cards to hurt credit scores. Also, the card I have been thinking of applying for is the Bank of America Platinum Plus card with 0% intro until Jan 2009 with 9.9% thereafter. It sounds like a good deal. Any thoughts on Bank of America though?

Lance90, It's possible to have too many cards at the time you're looking for a mortgage if the total credit limit for all of your cards is very high (I don't know an exact number, but my guess would be more than your gross income). It's possible - although not certain - that some mortgage lenders may get twitchy about having excessive available credit when you're looking for a mortgage. There are other factors to take into account, however, such as length of credit history and utilization history - but if you think you may be shopping for a mortgage in the near future, this might be something to keep in mind. (Sits back, waits for someone to post about getting a great mortgage while having over half a million bucks in available credit on a $32,000 annual income.)

Review: I have had this card for 11 years now (it has gone through several banks) and, believe it or not, it makes no difference to Chase. On a recent trip overseas I purchased a phone card for my foreign cell phone and it was considered as a cash advance when there was no cash involved - of course that carries a 25% interest rate (note that I do that with AMEX all the time and never had any issues). I called customer service and after 45 minutes with customer service, the dispute department and even the fraud department I was told by an unpolite person that even though this was a purchase, it is considered a cash advance and interest would be charged as such. The funny thing is, even as I make large payments they get to "choose" what is applied to purchases and what goes to cash advance which means until you pay off the whole balance you WILL pay the higher interest. I read several reviews on this card and the same applied to me. My interest rates have gone up every month for no apparent reason and when I called to verify why I received no plausible explanation and my rates were then reduced about 10%. There is obviously no respect to the consumer from chase, so stay away if you can.

Review: I have had my New York and Company card for 5+ years now. It was very helpful when I first graduated college and couldn't afford to pay for work clothes. I keep my balance fairly low so the minimum is low and easy to pay. I have only had to deal with customer service a couple of times, but have been pleased with them and gotten exactly what I wanted. My credit limit is raised about once every 18 months or so and I pay through my bank online, so I have really have no complaints.

Review: Being a loyal and good customer who had never been late for a payment for 6 years, what did I get as a reward when I was late paying my balance by one week when I was out of town? Late fees and finance charges that are not waived. Even after I paid off the existing balance and closed the account, the finance charges still haunted me.

Review: I've been paying online (on time). THE LAST 2 PAYMENTS, did not go through (HMMM...). So I was charged a late fee twice. There is nothing wrong with my computer. (I feel they get the payments, but claim they do not.) So I had to enter them again, and call customer service to be sure they received them. They were snotty when I requested a lower interest rate. The lady told me I could not have one because I was late with my payment (but I paid it online 3 days early, and with a $3900 payment. Weird.

Review: I called customer service to ask about the partially secured card, but no one knew what I was talking about. I applied for the unsecured card and was denied immediately online, but was approved for a secured card with an intial $300.00 deposit. I sent the funds and received card in about three weeks. It's an easy secured card to get with a low annual fee ($19.00).

This experience alone has me anxious for my annual review; I would love to transfer some outstanding CC balances. I would also be happy to have WF service my home/auto loans in the future. Job Well Done!

Review: World Mastercard attempts to go head-to-head with American Express Platinum card. I have both, and would have to say that my AmEx card has the definite edge. Premier Pass Elite Level has numerous benefits, many of which are lost in translation when trying to obtain insight on how to use them. Some customer service reps. were unaware Premier Pass even has a concierge service! When I informed them it was in my welcome packet, they put me on hold for several minutes; then gave me another number to call. Citi should dedicate a seperate website exclusively for Premier Pass Elite cardholders. This would be educational and exclusive for customers and easier to introduce new products. For those who want comparable benefits at a lower annual fee [but, without the status of AmEx], then I'd highly recommend PremierPass Elite Level.

Review: Every year I book a category 6 room in LA. This year I also booked in Detroit and in London, and paid for all of these with this card. I never had a problem with getting a room, and although Hilton is not the best hotel chain, they can be very good. There's no great advantage to getting 3 points per dollar spent; it's the ratio of 'how many points does it take to get a room' to 'number of points per dollar spent' that governs whether that's a good deal, and it appears to be fair - not great, not bad. Also, I got a Citibank Hilton card, took the bonus points for a purchase, then asked Hilton to merge the Citibank generated Hilton account points into my American Express Hilton account, which they did.

Worst Feature: not part of membership rewards
