We just got a new media request from a major personal finance site! The reporter is looking to speak with consumers who have recently used their credit card balance transfer checks to pay off a HELOC (home equity line of credit). HELOC rates have gone up over the past year and the rates on some HELOCs are now actually higher than the rate on many balance transfer offers! If interested, please contact us asap with your phone number and best time to call. Thanks for your interest in this important consumer topic!

Conflicting Credit Scores Cause Confusion
When you buy your credit score, it's almost certainly not the same number your mortgage lender will see. Your lender might see a lower score, or even one calculated on a different scale. It means you could apply for a loan thinking you deserve a low interest rate, but end up paying a higher one because your score wasn't as good as you assumed. Confusion arises because consumers and lenders often see different credit scores. (12/7/06)

Using a Credit Card for Overdraft Protection
It's a little known industry perk: If you have a checking account and credit card with the same institution, you may be able to link the two and use your credit card as overdraft protection. Whether you want to could be another issue. (11/28/06)

Cancel a Credit Card, Hurt Your Credit Score
Everyone knows that your credit score is important to your financial life, affecting the rates you get for mortgages, credit cards and insurance. Improving your score may save you thousands of dollars in interest. So would it help your score if you got rid of a credit card? (11/14/06)

Gas Pump Woes: Can Credit Cards Help Ease the Pain? (Part 1 of a 2-part series) The recent small drop in gas prices has been nice, but not overly exciting since it’s still a high price to pay for a tank of gas and considering that gas prices are rising again according to a recent MarketWatch article. People are searching for any way possible to cut their gasoline bills and if condensing errands, telecommuting and carpooling aren’t enough, one can always cut to the chase and try to save money at the point of purchase. Debit or Credit? Which is Better? A comparison of debit cards and credit cards. About a year or two ago, I received a letter and a brand new ATM card from my bank. The letter bragged about the new and improved card that could now act as a debit card. So I exchanged the old card for the new one and tore up the letter before throwing it in the trash. HOT TOPICS...I'm going to be one day late on my credit card payment...

I came home today and realized that my credit card payment was due on December 1st (yesterday). I am going in the store to pay it. Do I have to be concerned about being one day late? I have a Circuit City Chase Visa credit card. I tried calling their customer service but it was closed.

Arcangel79, I applied for the BOA World Mastercard with Worldpoints on November 27th. After submitting the application, I received a message that they needed more time to verify information that I submitted and that I would receive an email when a decision had been made. I see that they pulled Experian on the 29th (my Experian score was 709). Should I take this as an indication of a likely denial? Has anyone applied with them, received this message and been approved for the card?

TomfromCT answers, Well it is certinly no instant approval but many people who have received this same message have been approved. You might also end up being asked to call in and a question or two may get you approved. Good luck. It is a nice card and I have found BOA to be easy to deal with.

gordon, I currently have a Chase Card and I recently received an pre-approved application for an additional card. The letter states, "Your reward for good credit has finally arrived--you are pre-approved for a second product from Chase." Has this happened to anyone else? Should I apply?

bullwinkle29, Yes, I got one. I applied and my credit line was double the line of the other card. My first card had a credit line of $5,000. They approved the new card for $10,600. A week later I got one saying I was approved for a third card, I took it, and it was approved for $16,500.

Review: Great card for Costco Members. Costco members will benefit from this card the most since it's both a credit card and a membership card. It has no cap on cash rebates and to my knowledge it is not tiered like other Amex cash rebate cards.

Best Feature: 3% Cash back on restaurants - 2% on travel related purchases
Worst Feature: Costo membership required

Review: This is the worst card that I have. They don't take instore payments and the online pay service is through a third party that requires a lengthy registration process (never did it), then if you want to pay over the phone not only do they charge a fee, they charge it to your BR card. If you don't send the check far in advance they charge you a late fee the very next day, no grace period what so ever. I can't wait until its paid off.

Best Feature: $25 Reward Cards for spending, free shipping online
Worst Feature: They dont take in-store payments, online service is a third party, $10 Phone pay fee

Review: Great card all around! After Citi lowered their salivating 5% cash back to 2%, I decided to dump them for Chase. Now I don't have to wait to accrue $50 in rewards and then wait two weeks for a check in the mail. I simply spend like usual and every month I get a "payment" from Chase. Pretty sweet if you ask me! Only downside is that they don't seem too interested in granting CLI's without hard inquiries.

Best Feature: Rewards AUTOMATICALLY credited to next month's statement.
Worst Feature: High APR, but then again, don't all reward cards have high APRs?

Review: I have been happy with the credit card until recently. The company has decided to start mailing $10 "gift certificates" with a six month expiration date and deducting the amount from accumulated points. I prefer to save points for a larger purchase. The six month expiration date on the certificates forces you to make a purchase within that time frame or lose the points you have accumulated. I am not happy with the current decision. Their response is that not enough people were using their points so they issued the certificates as a reminder. Actually, they issued them hoping that at least some people would let them expire and the points could not be redeemed.

Best Feature: I get points to use in a store I regularly shop at.
Worst Feature: Expiring gift certificates.

Review: I received a confrimed acceptance offer in the mail from Capital One for this card with NO credit history! I applied and received a card with no annual fee and an APR of 19.8% (which after eight months of excellent credit history with them, I am currently trying to get them to reduce and they have pretty much agreed). Anyway, I had no history at all when I got this card. Of course, my initial limit was low - $300, but after only three months of managing the card well, they automatically upgraded me to a $500 credit limit. This is a way better card than all of those other subprime cards that charge too many fees. Since I've been doing very well managing my credit with this card, I've received about ten other card offers. This card has lead me to even learn about credit and what it affects, which is a lot of things. I'm very satisfied with it, although I hope they keep their promise and lower my APR soon.

Best Feature: You don't have to have any credit to get this card, and there is no annual fee.
Worst Feature: APR, which can be reduced

Review: I love this card. By using the card to pay for Starwood hotel stays you earn a whopping 5 points!!!! One night at 100 dollars equals 500 points. Also with starwood you have the option of using cash and points to book your room. Once you get the card you are given 10,000 points with the first purchase. (It usually shows up within 5 weeks.) So, you have several ways to enjoy a good nights rest for less money. Purchase points show up at the end of the billing cycle. My only complaint is the interest rate but if you pay in full at the end of the month, like the other amex cards, it's no problem. If you are a frequent traveler or just like hotel hopping, like myself, this is the card for you!!!!

Best Feature: Double points for Starwood Hotels and related businesses
Worst Feature: High interest rate

Review: If they came in the house I bet they'd look for change in the sofa! Get ready to spend a lot and get little in return - and that's with pretty good credit. First Premier Mastercard is full of charges. Capital One or Household Bank cards are much better to fix credit problems. $178 has been charged to my account already and it just came in the mail! They even charge when they increase your credit limit and we're not talking small fees (in this case it's $25). THEY CHARGE FOR EVERY POSSIBLE THING, including accessing your account online ($3.95) and a Program fee for extending you credit ($95). Then there's a $6 monthly Participation fee for having credit with them, a $3 monthly Maintenance fee, a $48 Yearly fee and that's just half the page!!! And not to mention their Autodraft, Express delivery (who asked for that?), Return item, Set up FEE, Cash advance, and Additional card Fees. The whole back page of their information is nothing but fees they fondly call FINANCE CHARGES. Don't get this card. I'm calling now to cancel and if there's a problem with that they can answer to the SEC.

Best Feature: None, 9.9% APR is the lead but they'll get it back and more
Worst Feature: FEES and FINANCE CHARGES FOR EVERY POSSIBLE THING!

Review: I got this card in the mail and I started wondering how they got my information. I remembered that a couple of weeks ago I got a phone call from a magazine company trying to sell me magazines. They spelled my name wrong because they got the information out of the phonebook, and it is spelled wrong there. THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A HIGH TECH THEFT. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CARD.
