HOT TOPICS...Preventing Account Termination for Inactivity

Gents, I could’ve sworn I saw somewhere on these boards that there are sites that accept small charges like $1 so credit card holders can keep their accounts active and prevent termination due to long periods of inactivity. Would anyone please name any of these sites, if any? I have about 10 inactive cards which I really don’t want closed due to inactivity. Click to Read Replies

jlrdc909, I saw posts some months back that said the Diners Club Card is now bearing the Mastercard logo. I had Diners Club many years ago, and AMEX as well. I got rid of them for 2 reasons, the fee's and limited acceptance. Diners had better service but was less accepted. I went to dinner with a friend the other day who has had the Diners Club, he has had this card for 25+ years, and claims the annual fee is worth it. Had Diners Club teamed with Mastercard due to declining membership? Very few people have Diners Club, at one time it was the official charge card of the US Government, also, when I had it I had to apply, has anyone ever had a pre-approved letter from Diners?

drrevrob, I just recieved my diners, now that it has the mastercard logo it is accepted everywhere mastercard is accepted. Haven't had any problems using the card and the benefits seem to be pretty nice.

Lyndzer, I realize they (Amex) state "no preset spending limit" but we all know that's a bunch of hooey. I'd hate to be somewhere and have my card declined because they think I've reached my max. If I called AmEx, would they tell me? Also, I read that you can enroll in the "extended payment plan". Any one know anything about this? Isn't that just like a credit card, not a charge card?

maverick answers, I have the Rewards Plus Gold card and I have no clue what the 'credit limit' is on that one. But I can tell you this: the highest single charge on the card has been a little above 4000 dollars, and there was no problem getting that through. I can help you with the second question, though. There are two extended payment plans available, one is "Sign and Travel", where you can choose to pay a part of expenses which are categorized as travel expenses by AmEx in your monthly bill. The second is termed as "Extended Payment Option" where you could do the same thing with individual charges that are more than $200. You can enroll in these programs on invitation from AmEx and have to pay nothing to be in that program and to have that facility. They might even give you some bonus points to enroll in those programs. I hope this helps.

Review: BofA Platinum fixed rocks! Don't know anything about this card being discontinued, but I have had it for several years and I love it. Bank of America has excellent customer service and I get good CLI's. I love having a fixed rate and being able to do everything concerning my acct. from the computer.

Review: Poor Payment Options. Overall a very negative experence with this card. They are very good about making you pay late fees. The 2 to 3 business day turnaround on online payments is a joke. They also sign you up automaticly for their debt cancellation program, which it is almost impossible to talk them into removing form your account. I even got a 3000 dollar Household Bank Credit card that I didn't know I signed up for. I will be cancelling this account as soon as my Surround Sound System is payed off. If you want interest free financing, shop at Circuit City instead.

Review: Cash Back Program: I have had the card for about a year and spend about $80,000 per year on purchases. I like the card but after you spend over $15,000 you only earn 1% cash back on everyday purchases, which is pretty weak. I was told that I would earn 2.5% cash back on my everyday purchases, and was disappointed when I only earned about 1% on my statment. I called to investigate and was told the rep gave me the wrong info. Good card but there are probably other cards that give better benefits for the amount that I spend.

Review: Get this card: Anyone who gets a secured credit card wants to for a reason, and NM exceeded my expectations. The best part about this card is the online payment/transaction history. You can set it up via their website to have your payment taken AUTOMATICALLY out of your checking account each month. It can be the minimum balance due or entire balance, you decide. No need to wait for your statement, and never miss a payment! Overall, no disappointments with this card.

Review: Application process: Zero percent interest for first 12 months on balance transfers and purchases plus $50 bonus is better than Citibank's offerings. Request for rebates can't be handled via internet; must call customer service. Slow application processing time. Inability to apply with spouse jointly; must submit more information and more paper work after the account is approved because company is supposedly constrained by the way their systems are set up. (Systems can't be modified?) Low approved credit limit even with outstanding credit. Annual limit of only $300 for cash back.

Best Feature: Cash back latitude and sign-up bonus Worst Feature: Inability to apply jointly with spouse; low credit limit.

Review: Capitol One helped me when I needed it. I screwed up, plain and simple. I didn't pay, and then I ducked them for a long time. Then I get this letter in the mail. It was an offer so good, I couldn't beleive it. I had an attorney at a collection agency check it out. Here was the offer: Pay off the current balance at 0% APR Once the balance was paid off, I got a new credit limit equal to 50% of the previous balance. I leaped on this offer. Paid the balance off in 8 months and got my shiny new card. Yes, the limit is still low after 2 years, but who can blame them. I use the card responsibly now. If they raise the limit great, if not, who cares. They worked with me instead of sueing me and putting me into collections. Capitol one will always have my business. But they won't be making much interest off of me.

Review: I purchased a $2300 riding mower with no interest and payments for a year. Straight forward....No. A week later I bought a bagger for the same mower on the same credit account. Then the Nightmare started. I paid off the BAGGER the next month. Then I was billed for the full amount of the mower. It was their mistake, I still had 10 months no interest and no payments right? No. I was later called by Lowes regarding my late payment, and I explained the terms I bought this on (no Int. no payments 1 year), which they would not hear. After 3 months of this nonsense and calls at 7:00A.M. on Sundays, I paid the bill off in full. You can't win with these people. Later after applying for a house loan, I learned that THEIR fraudulent activities showed up on MY credit report as a Deliquent pay, and was denied My loan based upon THEIR (MONOGRAMS) deceitful practices. Join the class action that I have joined. Search "Lowes class action lawsuit" and see how many are in my situation.

Review: Good card but: I agree that this is a good reward card because of the 5% cash back on gas and grocery shopping. But I just found out that my standard APR was raised to more than 20% by Citi in the past year, remember, the default rate on this card is about 23%! I have a good credit record: never late, only have two credit cards, no other loans or mortgages. So I called the customer service who said it was routine raises for a group of customers like me and nothing wrong or they could do. I think this is bullshit, routine raises to 20% without notifying me? So I checked the rate on my Amex Blue cash, they actually lowered my APR to 9.9% and it has been staying there for a year. So what is going on with Citi?!

Review: Consider this card only if you're prepared to expend peak miles. I had been happy with Alaska/Horizon's BOA Visa until later in 2005. I suddenly find that it is impossible to book a flight for nearly 6 months out without expending twice the points I'd always expended previously. (Used to be 20,000 within the contiguous 48; now is 40,000 for up to six months out). Since I have had friends on many of these flights where "no 'saver' point are available," I know that many of the flights are NOT full; clearly they could make m ore room for "saver tickets" as they did in the past if they chose to. This recent, unexpected change in in policy has ruined what had previously been a very workable mileage plan. I now find the mileage plan basically full of hassles and, for the $75 annual fee I pay, nowhere near as attractive as the rewards offered with other plans. Horizon Air is going to lose me as a customer, not just with frequent flyer miles, but for the paid flights. Other than the "standard cockroach letter," they have been very unhelpful when approached, as have their partners at Bank of America.

Best Feature: used to be travel rewards
Worst Feature: only flights into small cities cost peak (40,000) miles

Review: Be Forewarned!! We have been loyal to this chain for many years. We got the card to enhance our points because we travel frequently and it seemed a great benefit because we like to plan last minute trips. Many times we cannot book because they only allow a limited number of rooms (at each hotel) to be booked as "Reward Nights". Extremely disappointing experience for us.
