Hot Topics...Card Cancelled for Nonuse

"I had a Mastercard which I didn't use for over a year. Then, when renewal came, the issuer (Citibank) chose not to renew it. They said that the card was not used in over a year. Fine. As I've said, I didn't use it. The question is: even though I did nothing "derogatory", does this hurt my FICO with the credit bureaus? Will my credit report show "cancelled by issuer" or "closed by consumer"? Or what will it show when the issuer cancels for nonuse, instead of another reason? Do I need to do anything further?" jdh7802 asks, "I filed for bankruptcy more than 10 yrs ago (youthful indiscretion) and as a more mature adult, I have my act together today. I own a house, cars, credit cards, etc. My problem is that I'm required to get a corp. Amex for work for travel, etc. and have been denied by Amex because they were included in the bankruptcy 10+ years ago. They can't take restitution because they were included in the bankruptcy. So, now I'm stuck. My company is a fortune 100 company and pays the bill directly, but they still won't budge. Any suggestions?

Forum Moderator, Nightstar, replies, "Check over to www.artofcredit.com I think someone that way actually got a card again after bankruptcy, but can't remember the time period they had to wait. American Express is one of them hard ones to get around on with bankruptcy. Though I think you are better off without it, a lot of people get in a heck of a mess when their employers go belly up, and then they go after the employees to pay the credit card bills, and make it personal to start reporting the bad accounts. They are the worse for this problem, so if you get it tread carefully."

justmeinsc asks, "A family member added me to their GM Mastercard today in hopes to help me rebuild: all they asked for was my name. No social security number, address, or anything else. We wanted to make sure this was reported to my credit report as well as theirs, and GM assured us that even though I was going to be listed as an authorized user, it would still be reported. How can this be? Again, they didn't want my S.S. # or address, so how do they know it is reported to the correct credit report? This is just really strange to me. What is your opinion?"

Reply from cabledude, "I had the same question when I put my wife on a few cards of mine, but not to worry. They do find you and it will report so long as they said it will. Check your CR in about a month."

milinag replies, "I'm pretty sure they have a way and will find your SSN and will report you to the credit bureaus. I don't know how it works but my boyfriend added me to one of his CC for the same reason-help me to rebuild credit history and couple of months later the CC showed up on my report as authorized user...."

Senior Member, Verne posts, "I'm not sure whether I should dispute a charge that I "authorized" but in which I was misled and unsatisfied with the results. It would be my 3rd charge back on the same card in 3 years. I've been using various "people finder" services, gathering clues in a search for someone. I stumbled across reunitetonight.com, did a free search and later received an email that for $19.95 they had a current address for the person I was searching for in the particular state I had narrowed the search down to. I went for the bait and the results had nothing to do with the person I was looking for or were even in the state promised. Just a few names and addresses out of the white pages with the same rare last name. Obviously misled and ripped-off I went to ripoffreport.com and goggled reunitetonight.com. I found numerous complaints, many of which included later unauthorized charges on the credit card and a sudden increase in spam. The next day I reported my credit card compromised and had it reissued for a $6.00 fee. (I thought replacing a card was free but this is a credit union) ReuniteTonight.com makes contacting them difficult. The only way is an online support form that looks much like the order form - in other words, they probably use that as an excuse to charge the card again. Replies to their emails come back undeliverable. Their 800# referred me to their online form. I asked for a refund for the reasons I mentioned and they gave me the strange response that they were unable to give me a refund because I couldn't "return" what I had purchased. They offered me another free search which, of course, would be as worthless as the first. More research revealed that behind ReuniteTonight.com there's a couple DBA's that have unfavorable records with BBB's. They are obviously a scam and I will report them to the Internet Fraud Center and other authorities. But do I risk irritating my credit union with yet another charge back for a small amount? I've long forgotten what the original Visa agreement allows - whether I can dispute a charge when I'm unsatisfied with the results. I don't like to abuse this option but feel compelled to use it when I'm deceived and ripped-off. Any thoughts would be welcome. I'm usually more careful when I use my card online. BTW, I did start getting emails from legitimate online companies like "Sports Illustrated" with whom I had no prior contact. I'm thinking that someone else has submitted my email address for subscriptions."

Credit Expert, Polonius, replies, "The legal situation is murky for this one. You purchased a service and did get something in return. It's not the same as buying a product that was not delivered. If you still have the email saying that a person of that name in that state had been located and the reply you got did not match that description, you've got a great court case--but that's between you and the merchant, not between you and the credit union. I'd call the credit union, put the charge in contest, and see what happens then. Typically in a chargeback situation, the merchant is contacted and must respond with its side in a timely fashion. Probably this firm won't respond, in which case the chargeback is made permanent. I've never heard of a consumer being penalized for chargebacks--after all, you're the victim. Merchants with frequent chargebacks can have their accounts cancelled. I've got a great way of handling the "where did they get my email address" question! I have my own domain name and have an unlimited number of email addresses available to me at that domain name. If I wanted to give an email address to reunitetonight.com, I'd say that my address was reunite@polonius.com (if my domain were polonius.com, which it isn't). That way if I got an email from someplace else, I'd know reunitetonight did it for sure--since only it knew that address. After that happened, if I still wanted to do business with the firm for whatever reason, I'd go online and change my address to reunite1@polonius.com--and make sure that my email software bounced back any email sent to reunite@polonius.com. This way I continue to receive mail I want and NEVER receive mail from those who purchased my address."

Review: I just recently recieved a thing in the mail for a preapproved Mastercard, I kind of just laughed then realized that it's issued through the same bank that was willing to finance me for a $25,000 car after NOBODY else would,so I gave it a shot. I was surprised the see that I was approved. My credit is horrible after going through a divorce, so I am willing to pay an annual fee and a high interest rate to get my credit back in good standing. Thank you Orchard for giving me a chance!

Review: I think this is the greatest card ever! It gives good people that have made some credit mistakes in thier past a chance to proove themselves. the best thing about this card is that It's not reported to the credit Bureau's a secured card so it tends to look better to people who check your consumer report.

Review: This card isn't that bad. I've had it for a year or so. APR is 12.9, it had 6 mos. intro 0 int. My credit is so so at present, so I was happy to get it to expedite my repair process. To all the people complaining about late fees; and of course, said late fees pushing their balances over their limit, triggering an over limit fee- ITS YOUR FAULT! Don't blame Cap 1. It costs banks money to lend money and they have to recoup it somehow. I have had no problems whatsover with the card itself or customer service.

Review: I am now using this as my main card. It's 5% back for gas, grocery, and drugstore purchases, 1% for all others. As soon as you accumulate $50 in "dividend dollars" you can request a check by phone or online. I have already received 2 checks. I requested them online and they were here within 7 business days. And the last check had a little flyer enclosed stating that for the next 90 days I'd get 6% back on gas, grocery, and drugstore purchases, and 2% on all others. Zowie! There is a maximum of $300 per year in cash back, which I should make with no trouble. There's no annual fee and as long as you pay your bill in full monthly, it's all gravy. I haven't needed to contact customer service, so I can't comment on that, but my dealings with Citi on other cards I've had with them have been great.

Review: This card is a rip off. when my RETIRED mother applied for this card they charged her for unemployment insurance and all the other optional insurances. when a person tells you they are retired, they have no need for insurance. the one good thing was when i bought this to their attention they quickly credited her account and she did not have to make a payment for 4 months.anyone with an elderly relative with a lowes account should check their options and insurance coverages.

Review: I was attracted to this card because of their promise of a 5% rebate on all gas purchases made at the pump, plus a reward points system to win various gifts. Within a few months they completely did away with the reward points and basically reduced the gas rebate to 2%. When I called to inquire about this I was pretty much told that they were sorry I was upset, but that's the way it is, and if I would like to cancel they could do that. I hadn't switched my credit card provider in 20 years, in order to protect my 809 plus credit rating. After carefully studying different reward cards, I switched to the AAA Platinum Plus Card, only to have the rug pulled out from under me. I would not recommend doing business with these people.

Review: I opened a Bank of America Platinum Visa, actually Barnett bank when I got the card, around 12 years ago... When it switched to bank of america i was given a great rate of 8.9% in 2001, then they lowered it to 6.9% fixed in 2004, in july i "switched" my card from the regular platinum card to the rewards cards i think finicial rewards to be exact, i still had my "regular" card, but had the rewards on it for about a month (they take forever to do anything, it took them a month to change a credit card number) anyway, i was looking to buy a new lexus, paying cash for it, but i decided to "charge" it so that i got reward points, and pay it off at the end of the month... Big mistake!!!! When Bank Of America finally generated a new CC# they put on my credit report, that they closed my account that i had opened for 12 years with a $43,567 UNPAID balance, furthermore stating that the account had been closed my the grantor (bank) and that a new account was opened with a higher credit limit, but a BRAND new account. furthermore my rate went from 6.9% to 14.73% VARIABLE, What really got me was that i paid the suv off that month and it was NOT late, the balance was "Transfered" as they tell me in August, and i paid the balance on the new account, well the idiots didn't report that to my creidt breau, it didn't say late on my old account, but bank of america never updated the info, and their credit dept. is so stupid they couldn't tell a AMEX from a VISA if it was in their face, long story short it took me a little over 2 months to get my credit right, and i no longer bank with these people...
