Is Wife Liable for Credit Card Debt? I have filed bankruptcy, Chapter 7. The issuer of one of my credit cards that I had my wife's name on has assigned that card to her. And now she has that debt. However, it was never a joint card. And when I asked for them to send me the application, they said it was done electronically over the phone. I do not think I put her down as a joint applicant for this card, but how can I prove this? Read more >>

Your Credit History and Your Credit Card
Using credit cards irresponsibly can land you in a debt load of trouble, but responsible use can help bail you out. HOT TOPICS - Where have all the good times (Offers) gone?

Just a short while ago, earlier this year, my mailbox was literally under siege from every card issuer in the nation sending a 0% this or 1.9% that or no fee balance transfer this or a cash into your checking account that. The good old days? I rarely get an offer now days much less a good offer. My FICO scores are higher than they were last year EQ-711/EX-709/TU-717, yet the choice offers aren't coming. I get loads of stuff from Amex and cap 1 but short of that the well has runneth dry and I wonder why? Is it just me or is this something you all have noticed as well? Maybe I have cooties?

Alecia, Question 1: I have a CitiDividend and a CitiSimplicity card which are paid in full. I also have a CitiDiamond Preferred which is 0% for Life and lastly I have a CitiUpromise Card that is 0% until August, 2008 with no balance transfer fee. I want to consolidate the CitiDividend and CitiSimplicity cards. Which two cards should I consider consolidating together/into since reallocation with Citi is not favorable anymore?

Question 2: How is Chase on balance transfer usage? Should I stay below 35% with them or can I go to 50% without any static?

Polonius, Try for reallocation on the Citi cards to whatever you wish before you opt for consolidation. I hear that Citi is once again allowing reallocation to 0% offers. You lose nothing by asking.

As for your second question, no one can answer that. Chase says you can use up to your available credit limit (less fees) for BTs. Why does everyone assume that if you do what Chase says you CAN do you're going to run into trouble? I have a Chase BT now at 90% of my limit and haven't seen any flack yet. But my credit profile is quite different from yours--and that's the point: there are no hard and fast rules for adverse action, to my knowledge anyway, and all the stories we hear about adverse action are just that--anecdotes from people who don't really know precisely what caused the action and are only guessing. My general rule is to keep the usage under 50% of the limit on each card and overall, but I sometimes go higher than that for a nice offer and, so far at any rate, that hasn't caused me a problem of any kind.

Tigress, Have you used the express pay feature? If so, does your reciept show a different account number on it? Either I got some one else's reciept that actually had the exact same items as me or the account shows up different or something. Because the last four digits were not my card number (that I know of) but it did say it was paid by Amex and it was my exact order.

azntg, Yes, if you use the Expresspay feature on your Amex Blue, it will show up as a different account number (on the receipt anyway), but will post to your account as usual. I personally find that usually it's just faster to swipe (authorization is faster) than to tap.

Review: The customer service has been excellent. I am not yet sure if this card reports to D & B or to one's personal credit as a business credit line. I hope to see a drop in my APR at some point.

Review: Recently I transferred some money from one of my wife's credit cards (that had a high interest rate) to one of my credit cards. At that point, Bank of America increased my interest rate to 27.9% per month. I have NO late payments on any of my credit cards or other loans. When I called Bank of America to ask about the rate they were charging me, the customer service representative was rude (suggesting that I enroll in a debt reduction program). I asked him if there was something I could do to reduce my interest rate, he said, "Pay off most of your debt." I have been paying more than twice the minimum payments on all of my credit cards and have never made a late payment to Bank of America.

Review: I have had this card for several years, with over 800,000 points accumulated. VERY difficult to find a hotel that won't tell you it "doesn't have a room available to book with points." This card has gone farther and farther downhill. I have switched to Hilton's - I hope my experience is better.

Review: I had this card for 9 years, was never late, paid over minimum and never went over limit. My reward for being such a good customer was a raise in interest rate from 15.99%(horrible) to 29.99% (predators!), and all this without notice. I made the call to "customer service" (they should really try to think of something else to call that department, since it is a far cry from anything remotely resembling customer service), and was told the reason for the rate increase was a "business decision". The supervisor I asked for next said the same thing. Needless to say, I made the "business decision" to close the card and will have it paid completely off within six months or sooner. It has become my number one priority to finish my business with WAMU and to never give them another opportunity, EVER, to get at my throat again. Please take my advice and get out of business with this company if you are a current cardholder, or never be tempted to open one of their cards if you haven't yet - you will regret it if you do.

Credit Card: BP Gas Card

Review: In Brief: While traveling in June 2007, I called in to make a payment by phone so that it would not be late. I paid what I was told was the entire balance of $57.00. I did not phone in to make a payment in July, since I had not used the card. When I returned home in September, I opened my August bill, which was due Sept. 13. The August bill showed a "past due amount" of $2.00, which was interest on the $57.00 from June. Since I had not phoned in to pay the $2.00 in July, there was a "late fee" of $15.00 on the $2.00. To repeat, when I phoned in to pay the full balance due in June, I was not told about the $2.00. The "nice" people at BP Amoco told me that since my card was "past due", I had been reported to a credit agency. They also told me that bacause I was "past due", they could not discuss waiving the late fees with me. I told them to cancel the card. Don't become a victim of BP Amoco's late fee scheme.

Credit Card: Providian Airpoints Card
Provided by: Providian
Total Posts: 5
Average Rating: 3.20
Category: Reward - Airline
Date posted: 9/17/2007

Review: I wrote an earlier review praising the fact that you could redeem 20,000 points for an airline ticket worth $500. That is a 2.5% return and, sadly, one of the best deals going in the rewards market. Or at least it was...

WAMU took over Providian recently and afterwards I received a notice in my statement that said the rewards program would be changing for the worse. The airline tickets now have a $35 fee associated with them and 20,000 points gets you a $300 ticket (minus the $35) instead of the $500 ticket. (This will go into effect Oct 7, 2007.) The other rewards (which were basically 1% in the form of gift cards for various retailers and some products) will be changing as well, but the details of this change were not specified in the mailing.

So now I am left with all of my points that will be devalued on October 7 and there is nothing really I can do about it. I would have been better off with a plain old Discover and getting the 1% in cash instead of gift cards.

Best Feature: It used to be a great rewards card when it was Providian.
Worst Feature: Now WAMU has decimated the rewards and you would be better off getting a Discover

Review: After two months Advanta charged me a finance charge. When I signed up I was sure there was 12 months 0% interest on purchases. I called and they told me that was for balance transfers. I had no balances transferred. I went to their web site and saw that they were offering O% on balance transfers and 0% interest for 12 months. I called them back and told them this and the man said he couldn't change my account. I left ADVANTA and in the process of opening another account. BAIT AND SWITCH.
