'Spend-to-save' credit card: Can it work for you?
Can you really save by spending? Several card issuers believe it's possible, and they've issued the plastic to prove it. We have been pretty impressed, but would like consumer feedback as well.
haz410,
I was wondering, because Bank of America sent me some 0% APR blanace transfer checks, is it possible to write these checks in your or maybe your spouse's name and deposit it into a bank account? I mean would they consider that a cash advance? On the offer they said "pay off a high interest credit cards or use the money for a vacation."
I am asking because if I can deposit it into my account, then I could invest the money and it would be interest free. That way I make money off the deal.
Also if you can deposit it, are you only allowed up to your cash advance limit or you entire credit limit.
IRA answers,
Technically there is no such thing as a "balance transfer," although banks use it as a convenient term for a special class of credit card loan. You can write a balance transfer check to anyone including the devil himself if you so desire. I myself, as have dozens of folks on this board, have made some interesting money by doing exactly what you're contemplating - write a check to yourself for just under the credit limit for the card, deposit it into an interest bearing account, pay the minimum each month, and withdraw the remaining principal from your interest bearing account just in time to pay it off under the terms of the 0% offer.
The one caveat is that the card you're going to be using must have a zero balance when you start. If not you could lose big time due to the fact that payments are allocated first to that portion of your debt that has the lowest APR. That of course would be your BT balance. If there's anything left over it goes towards paying off higher rated debt. So if you start off with a balance of several thousand there's no benefit at all to the 0%.
gordon,
Within the next month our company will discontinue issuing regular payroll checks. Instead a choice of either direct deposit into a checking or
savings account we will be offered a second option which is a preloaded debit Visa card through National City Bank. The card does not charge a fee for the first cash withdrawal each week. I know this does not function as a credit card, but if anybody has any past experience or opinions with this type of situation info would be greatly appreciated.
wierdo,
The department of labor in some states has something not too nice to say about companies that require such evil paycards, since with most it's impossible to get out the full amount of your pay, since ATMs don't dispense coins, 5s, or 1s, and in a lot of cases, no longer 10s, either.
Be glad your company isn't using the money network. They give you 4 free ATM transactions a month, and claim to have one fee free ATM around here. Of course, they fail to mention that the fee free ATM has an absolutely tiny daily withdrawal limit, so most people can't withdraw their entire paycheck.
The only saving grace is that you can use it as credit for free, but I don't really consider that a good thing, either, since you have even less protection than you do with a normal bank debit card...
I know exactly what I'd tell a place that didn't want to pay me with cash or check, and they wouldn't be happy, either.

Great if you pay in full.
The rewards program is actually kind of cool. Not only do you earn 3% on gas stations (which includes anything bought inside), drugstores, and grocery stores, you can enroll your car to earn cash off the miles you drive. When you're ready to buy a car, you submit a form and-voila!-you get a check. Can be dealer or private, new or used.

AOPA Cards are not competive now.
With the anounced change in the AOPA card that will do away with the 5% rebate, the AOPA card will now have much competition from other gas cards like Air-BP which does offer a good rebate.

All the trouble started when Citibank took over my Exxon account. I've always paid on time or early. An electronic wire payment was made for the entire balance (about $52.00) over a week before it was due. Citibank received the payment and promply sent us a letter stating that we had OVERPAID our account and they would issue a check if we did not use the card within a specified period. I Called customer service in a totally worthless and frustrating attempt to fix the problem. A week later, I received a billing from them stating we were late on our account payment (about $52.00), and they slapped a bunch of late fees on our balance and raised the interest rate to 28%. I called customer service again in a totally worthless and frustrating attempt to fix the problem. A week later, I RECEIVED a check for about $52.00 from Exxon, because "our account was overpaid." I called customer service again - this time they admitted their errors (after we had our bank fax Exxon proof of payment), and they removed the late fees. They said we still owed the $52. We cashed the check from Exxon and transferred AGAIN the $52 payment to them. As of yet, they say "we show no record of receiving payment." We verified all account information as correct, and once again, the bank faxed proof of payment to exxon. We are unable to resolve this issue with Exxon - customer service is worst I have ever delt with. Stay away from Citibank and Exxon!

If you pay off your card monthly and spend more than $1,500 a month use this card. We use it to travel to Florida and Washington for cruises. This year was the first time I ever regretted it. The flight times just didn't line up and I spent too much money on a hotel due to the need to stay an extra night. We fly at least once a year on this card. Most often, I can get something to work with flights. I love the special 2 miles for 1 dollar promos. Customer service has been reliable and consistantly decent(not excellent, but good).

I have a platinum and silver card from this company. I have never been late and always pay way more than the minimum, sometimes paying them off. Recently I carried about a 50% credit balance on my limit on both cards for a few months and they raised my APR from 13.5% to 28% without notice. I called to ask why and they stated that I was carrying a balance and they raised my APR. I asked if I paid down the balance in full, would my APR come back down. They said they were not sure. Well, I have and it still hovers at 28%. When I called again to ask, a lady said oh well you'll have to deal with it. I was surprised to hear this since I’ve been in great standing with them in my 3+ years. I would have to say that this is a great card to get to start rebuilding your credit, just keep your balances low and pay them off immediately. I will hold onto the cards for emergencies, but now I'm getting offers from Capital One and I just received the GM Card with 0% APR for 12 months and 5.75% thereafter. I also found that there is a CAP they place on credit that limits spending on the card type. Even with a score of 710 I could not get past 700 on the silver MasterCard. Good luck to all in this ever-so-wild credit industry.

I got my first checking account and credit account right out of high school from Wells Fargo. I had no credit history previously and I was approved for the College Visa Credit Card. It seemed pretty good with no interest for the first 6 months, but after that your interest rate skyrockets (which I guess is to be expected for your 1st card). I've been a member for about two years now and my credit limit has been bumped up 3 times to $2,300 starting from $1,000. Included with the college account, you get bill pay and overdraft protection for your checking account if you choose to do so. Otherwise, there are no cash back or any other type of incentive benefits whatsoever. Overall, it is an okay card.

A couple months ago the rebate coupons became gift cards, issued in $10 increments. You can also now use them online. This is great because you can give the gift cards as gifts- as opposed to the original coupons that were issued. The only sad thing...my kids (& friends) are getting older and are outgrowing almost everything (except electronics) at Toys R Us.

Review: A great card from a great company. I never keep a balance on it so I don't care about the interest rate. Nevertheless, the rate is lower than other cards. I like the way that I can transfer money from my accounts to pay my balance and vice versa. The biggest advantage is the overdraft protection it offers in conjunction with my bank accounts. My wife's account, the one we use to pay the bills with, occasionally gets overdrawn (she isn't very careful when writing out the checks). Despite recent acquisitions and growing pains, USAA really looks out for the me.
