Fixed Rate Cards are Never Truly Fixed
Consumer alert: Tempted by a fixed APR offer?
Don't let such offers fool you. The interest rates on fixed rate

"There are a lot of 0% for 12-months programs out there. I was
thinking about applying for all of them, investing the money, and
then paying back the debt before the offer expires. It's like free
money! What do you guys think of this idea? Is anyone else trying
this?"

Guest, Bruce, asks, "I do not know if
I fit in your category or not. I just checked my credit report
and Sherman Acquisitions is on it, but i do not know how they came
to be on it. I am going to call them Monday and try to find out.
I just got discharged from a bankruptcy this April, I filed it in
1997 because of divorce, so if they had a debt counted from it and
are still trying to hold me liable I will let you know if you want
and see where to go from there. Right now I am just trying to get
on the right track in repairing my credit. I was researching them
to see who they were and try to get a clue why they were on it and
your ad appeared on the search engine."
Senior Member, Verne, replies, "Sherman Acquisitions has a
very poor reputation. Check out ripoffreport.com and creditinsiders.com.
I believe FlyingFr posted about his problems with Sherman Acq. and
eventually prevailed. If you talk to Sherman Acq. don't take their
word for anything. They tell people one thing and do another. Be
savvy and know your rights before talking to them and get any sort
of agreement in writing. Once you know where you stand, you may
want to dispute the Sherman Acq. listing on your credit report. But
first see how those at ripoffreport and creditinsiders handled a
similar situation."
Reply from Guest, Fred, "I am in the same boat as
these people, I have been over my credit rating reports and made
some final payments and when I checked my rating to see if it went
up I find these guys on there and I have no idea how or why."
Guest, Tracy, inquires, "Hi! I have 2
credit cards that have good rewards programs. Chase and Sears
Mastercard. I'm wondering who else out there have good rewards
programs. I'm looking mostly for good dining rewards! I hope someone
can help!"
Reply from a Guest, "The obvious answer is AMEX. Since you
have chase you should qualify for it."
Tracy answers, "I checked out Amex but I didn't see many
dining rewards offered by their rewards program?? With Chase I get
Red Lobster/Olive Garden certificates. With my Sears gold card I
get Denny's and Pizza Hut coupons. I LOVE eating out at all 4 of
these places BUT would love to add on more. I charge up to $20,000
per month and pay it off each month so my points can REALLY add
up fast. Today I just got a FREE snowblower at Sears with my points.
(Winter is coming SOON here in WI) My Fico score is 706 at this moment.
I pay all balances by their due date. I just want MORE reward choices!!
Are there different Amex rewards card options?? Thanks for the help!"
Guest, Eileen, asks, "I have an atm card
and Harris is trying to convert me to a debit card with a Mastercard
logo. If I use credit cards for purchases, why would I want this?"
Senior Member, Ira, replies, "Eugene, we've had this discussion
before. First of all, I can find no discernable difference between
the two. Second, when a bank goes to a MC or Visa debit card, they
don't always give consumers the choice. It's simply one less program
for them to administer"
Senior Member, Eugene, responds, "ATM card can be used
mainly for cash, sometimes for purchases. Always requires a PIN
number, that's why it's more secure. Never has a Visa/Mastercard
logo on it. Debit / check card always has V/MC logo, links you to
your checking account (as opposed to a line of credit in case of
credit cards) and can be used with a PIN or without (like a credit
card, with signature required). Less secured than an ATM card, as
it's easy to forge the signature. The signature is very rarely
checked anyways. Yes, some banks do not offer ATM cards, just debit
cards, but that's a big disadvantage of those banks in my view,
for reasons above and those described in the conversations I mentioned
in the post above.

Review:
Capital one is one of the best creditors when it comes to
credit cards. Low interest rates, decent credit lines, allows
you to make as payments as there are days in the month you
wish to pay for online. One payment per account no less than
24 hours apart, unlike other creditors. I saw a post here that
said capital one scans a copy of your check used to pay for
your credit card bill monthly then destroys the check. That
confused me. Assuming you pay your cap. one bill with a check
drawn from another bank (for example citibank) then they must
forward that original check to citibank. Citibank may scan
it then destroy it. All checks make their way back to the
original bank, no?

Review:
I have been a Cap. 1 customer in the past. I never had a
late payment and also have a FICO score in the high 700's
(pretty close to perfect). I have tried to inquire about
the 4.99% FIXED interest rate online and on the phone with
their customer service. Apparenly they only offer the 4.99%
rate per invitation only. It is funny how the major focus of
their tv ad. campaign displays a rate that only a fraction of
one percent of Amercians will even be allowed to obtain. It
is the typical "bait and switch" sales tactic usually reserved
for used car sales people and time-shares. Lure them in with
one rate, lock them in on a much higher rate. Way to go Capital
One!!! what strong ethical standards you are exhibiting!

Review: I have been with American
Express since 2001. I had the Blue for student card for 1
year then upgraded to the Blue regular with no problems.
Since I always pay my bills on time and in full no matter
how much it is, interest rates and other fees have never
affected me. Recently I needed to by a few appliances so I
called my other cc company first (MBNA platinum) for a line
increase. I was denied. Then I went to the AE website and
requested to double my limit to $4G. With in days, they did
it no questions asked. I love American express.

Review: I have excellent credit,
and applied for the card when the fixed APR rate was 9.9%
Upon recieving approval, we balance transfered and quickly
paid off those balances. We then learned that our interest
rate was 12.9%. We have protested this three times, and were
told that we would have to provide a copy of our application.
How can we do that when we applied by phone? The customer
service rep and his supervisor were extremely rude, telling
us that we would have to cancel our card and apply again to
get 9.9%, much less the 7.9% that is falsely promised on
commercials every night. I thought anything associated with
the AMEX company would be more ethical but now I know better.

Credit Card: Orchard Bank MasterCard® Classic

Review: As of today 1/21/04, I
can't say anything bad about Orchard/houshold's credit services.
Everytime I attempt to contact customer service 1-800-771-7293
I never wait longer than 5 minutes, they give their entire
names, they are courteous, and are very helpful. Maybe everyone
else is calling 1-503-245-9280 which is why I haven't
encountered any problems. I pay my full balance before the
due date, to not encur any finance charges. When they sent
me the application the processing fee was 19.00 which they
applied back to my card once approved. So I paid 19.00 via
check and they put 19.00 worth of extra credit on my card.
My limit is $300. Then they charged me $79 for the membership
fee, I didn't realize that I had paid it...when I paid my
bill. Not a problem though. Each month my credit report is
noted that I paid on time. I can't complain, they've been
good to me, thus far. I'd recommend them anytime.

Review: As far as the subprime
credit card banks go, Household is probably the best. But
being the king among scum isn't saying very much. If you ever
call customer service, expect to have a high pressure sales
pitch about credit payment protection, identity theft
protection or whatever the pitch of the day is. Their
representatives are trained to read scripts that are very
similar to those used by very very very annoying telemarketers.
I don't expect to have my credit card customer service
trying to sell me anything... they better just answer my
questions! Not a very nice thing to do to the credit impared.
It was impulse credit buying that got most people in trouble
in the first place. They know this and take evil advantage
of it. The credit limit increases are hard to figure out.
I started with a 1000 limit. After 6 months, they raised it
by $250.00 automatically... then I requested one at 7 months
and they raised it by another $100 for a $10 fee. I pay off
my balance every month. After a year, they are not raising
my limit. I sense they like to raise limits when you carry
a balance every month and carry a high balance to credit
limit ratio. Thats right... they like you maxed out and carrying
a balance month-to-month. Don't get maxed out confused with
over the credit limit. That and late payments are big no no's.
Best Feature: They approve the credit impared
Worst Feature: The customer service is real bad. Constant telemarketing

Review: I have paid for the credit
protection plan at a rate of $20 per month for years. Two
years ago Boenig laid me off. I am still out of work. Trying
to get Sears to send me a claim form for the plan I paid to
protect me in a case like this has been impossible. All they
do is refer me back to the collection agency who now has my
account as a result of my inability to pay due to layoff.
It smells more and more like a scam. Charge people for
insurance you can't use when you need it. Run them around on
the phone for hours on end, disconnect their calls and
refuse to respond to letters requesting the claim for that
will solve the payment problem. I am considering a lawsuit
against these idiots. In the meantime I urge you all to drop
your credit protection plans if you have them as you are
literally paying for nothing.
