HOT TOPICS...The Time to Speak Up is NOW! The FRB is Accepting Comments

As consumers we need to take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves, and such an opportunity closes on December 16, 2005. The federal reserve is accepting public comments on open-end credit disclosures. You can find the notice at: Second Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) concerning the open-end (revolving) credit rules of the Board's Regulation Z. Not a lot of publicity occurs regarding these comment periods, but it is the federal reserve that has the power to fix the anti-consumer practices that plague the lending industry. Consumers have to speak up, the lenders are and if consumers do not, they cannot complain when the federal reserve enacts anti-consumer rules. Click to Read Replies

diddlydudette, I thought this was wonderful until I put in my Cash Plus credit card number on their site to see if my card is eligible for this, but it's not. You might want to check yours at chase.com/lovethe double. I wonder what their criteria is. Anyone have a hunch why Cash Plus card isn't? It states in their ad in magazine that gas stations, grocery stores, drugstores and restaurants are double. Well, doesn't that sound like the Cash Plus card?

shooter, I sent a message through their normal "contact us" portion of the website. After 2 days I got a form letter back saying they would forward my request to "the appropriate department." A week later the "appropriate department" sent the following reply: If you are having difficulty with enrollment in the Love The Double Promotion or have other technical questions related to our on-line service, please call our technical support center at 1-877-999-3872. A technical support specialist will be happy to provide you with step-by-step assistance over the telephone.

chick, I'm embarassed to say that I have no idea what criteria the CC companies use to decide it they're going to give you an account. I don't want to apply, be turned down, and get dinged for the credit check. I'd like to move my $18K in credit card debt to an account with a lower interest rate -- I'm at 26% now, ouch! The negatives on my credit report: 1- a Chase account charged off 5/04 for $10K -- I've since paid off the entire amt to the company that bought off that account. 2 - Current credit card: open/current, was past due 30 days 8/04 (crap, a late payment within the last 6 months... I'm on auto-pay now!) 3 -A Victoria Secret card Inactive/current, was past due 30 days 2/02 Can anyone advise me on getting that interest rate down? I'm paying down quickly, but I'm trying to learn how to not throw the $$ out the window in the process! thanks!

Polonius answers, Banks look at different things, target offers to different markets, have different profiles for the sort of customer they seek. Often it makes little sense and is quite inconsistent. I could tell stories! Here are a few of such latest stories. I got a Chase Platinum card this week--limit $4,000. I have four other Chase cards, one with a limit of $45,500. Make sense? No. I go online and see what balance transfers are available for the five cards I have. Because of the merger of BankOne with Chase some months ago, I can see all five accounts on the old BankOne site AND on the Chase site. When I ask for balance transfers on the BankOne site, I'm told none are available for any of the five cards. When I try the same on the Chase site, I'm told that 3 of the cards have balance transfer offers available (.99% for 6 months with a $65 fee maximum on 2, 0% on one)--and NONE AT ALL on the remaining two cards. Make sense? No. Remember, my credit profile/scores/histories are exactly the same for each of these decisions that determined a credit limit or what balance transfer offers to make to me. Or, to put it another way, I owe $160,000 on credit cards. Why would any bank give me another credit card? One bank will say--hey, he's got lots of credit so if the other banks trust him so will I. Another bank will say--hey, he's got a lot of credit so if he's applying for more he must be getting ready to skip town and screw us all. Same facts. Totaly different decisions. Often it all depends on what particular person is looking at the credit report and what mood they're in that day. Often if you're turned down by one credit analyst, you can just call, speak with another, say exactly the same things, and get approved. Personally, I'm glad it's all so inconsistent. Makes the game more fun!

Review: Reputable Company: AMEX customer service is responsive and treats me well. I've really come to recognize this recently as my other card companies have increased my APR, changed my fixed rate to an adjustable and generally provide poor customer service by treating me as if they are suspicious of my statements. I've earned my good credit through responsible spending and payments; I don't like to be treated suspiciously by the CSR. AMEX is reputable, straight forward and receptive to my inquiries.

Review: Chase has damaged their reputation with me: I've maintained a balance with MBNA for about 12 months and I pay more than the minimum each month and have not been late or missed a payment even once. My credit score is very good. Found out MBNA increased my APR from 8.99% to about 25.99% due to 'inconsistent payments' Each month MBNA makes money by lending to me with A+ credit. I paid the balance off before the next month and closed the account. With my credit and assets, MBNA is not doing me a favor by lending me money, I'm doing it a favor by borrowing at nearly 9%. The day I see a credit card company sticking it to me as if I was a terrible credit risk is the day I close the account.

Best Feature: Convinced me not to use MBNA again very quickly
Worst Feature: Huge APR increase --

Review: Credit reporting detriment to cardholder: I have a GM Extended Family Card. I pay my statement on time and in full. I have never paid any interest confirming what was just said. As a result of my paying my bills on time and in full, the Interest they show on my account is just under 20 percent. This is higher than their advertised rate. They issued me a platinum card with a $10,000.00 line of credit. This would contradict their assessing me as a poor credit risk if they gave me this $10,000.00 line of credit. It is almost impossible to contact anyone at the GM Card who can be of any help or offer a valid explanation. I have had about 2 instances where their fraud section "flagged" my account when I dealt with one certain company.

Review: This Card is a Nightmare: I got this card when I was 18 for college purposes. I used the card and payed my payment on time every month. I never went over my balance. I eventually transfered the balance to another card with a lower interest rate and closed the account. I check my credit report on a normal basis, just 3 months ago when I checked it (keep in mind now, its been 4 years since I had this card) it stated that the balance was unpaid and they wrote it off as a loss. Which is now killing my credit...May I ask why did they wait 4 years to post this to my credit report, all lies. I have sent proof of payment and they ignore me. Beware, nothing good will come from this card.

Review: Avoid this card if you pump diesel or travel to Canada: Took a long trip to Eastern US and Canada in August 2005. Pumped lots of diesel using the card, only to find out that the rebate doesn't apply if the stations don't accept credit cards at the pump. Most truck stops don't have automated diesel pumps (due to size of purchases) unless they have one at the gasoline islands. Also, most stations we found in Canada outside the main cities didn't have any automated pumps, including gasoline. The card was useless for it's rebate. Cost us at least $75 in missed rebates in one month.

Review: 5% Cash Back Despite Pushy Customer Service Reps: I have already received the maximum $300 annual cash dividend for this year. Overall, I am very happy with the card. The only drawback has been pushy customer service reps who have tried numerous times to convince me to sign up for ID theft protection, transfer a balance, use a convenience check, etc. Otherwise, I love the card and would recommend it to friends.

Review: FELT DECEIVED!: During the first year I had this card I was very impressed, however, things changed after that first year! Number one complaint was that they indicate in their promotional material that if the card is kept in good stead for a period of one year you can graduate to a non-secured card? This proved to be "untrue" in my case! They failed to inform me in any of their promotional litrature that in addition to keeping the card in good stead for that first year(ie: making payments on time and not exceeding credit limit)that a minimum FICA Score of 600 was needed to qualify for the unsecured card, I felt this extremely "deceptive"! What agitated me most however was their utter failure to address my complaint which was sent to the President of their Card Services Division on two seperate occassions! There is "no excuse" for this type of "unacceptable" behaviour from a firm that is making money off of you... the fact that they totally ignored both written inquiries says a lot about their committment to real customer service! The advise... "be careful"!

Review: Best T&E Card: 1st year pay the $95 annual fee and recieve 12K Club Reward points. Upon renewal, call the Bonus Rentention Dept (800) 753-5577 to have the $95 annual fee waived (a $95 credit) or perhaps recieve additional Club Reward points added to your account over the next several months. I didn't like personal cards going from 60 days to 30 days to pay in full (Corporate cards still have 60 days to pay in full). On the other hand, Diners Club cardmembers biggest grip for years was lack of acceptance. With Mastercard acceptance, no more acceptance problems. Frequent flyers really like Diners Club for its Club Rewards program. It has won 8 Freddie awards by voters of Inside Flyer Magazine. The flexibility to transfer miles into almost any airline frequent flyer program domestically or many international ones. Also great for topping off your miles for that additional ticket or upgrade. Club Reward sometimes runs special redemptions on certain airlines. No problems with customer service and concierge is available. Primary Car Rental Insurance is provided in most countries. Diners Club gets Two Big Thumbs Up!
