Discover Card Consumer Survey Shows we're Upbeat about our Personal Finances, but…
In May, Discover launched a new research program, the “Spending Confidence Monitor,” with Rasmussen Reports, a well-known, independent survey research firm. Together, they’re planning to survey lots of us every month – they interviewed 500 consumers daily (15,000 total) in August alone – to find out what we think we’ll spend in the future, what shape our finances are in now, and what our opinions are on the economy.

Credit Card Direct Mail Response Rates Take a Nose Dive
In 1998, credit card issuers could count on a response rate of 1.2% to the offers for new cards that they sent out. For every 1,000 pieces mailed, 12 people would sign up.
The projected response rate this year is only 0.28%, or four times less than what the credit card industry received less than a decade ago. Now, for every 1,000 pieces of mail, not quite three of us bite at the offers being sent to us.

Credit cards used to come in standard, gold and platinum. Now there's green, too.

Smart Strategies After the Rate Change
OK, now you know if you were a winner or a loser after the Fed's decision. So what are you going to do about it?
Knowledge is a good thing, but knowing how to act on it is even better -- particularly when your personal finances are involved.
So Bankrate has taken a look at what's happened in five important categories -- mortgages, home equity borrowing, certificates of deposit, auto loans and credit cards -- and offered some advice on what your next step should be now that the Fed has made its move.

HOT TOPICS - When The Feds lower rates, will credit card issuers lower rates?
Yes or No?
jesusdyd4u,
I've read with interest about using the AMEX Blue card in conjunction with the Chase Freedom Signature VISA to max rewards dollars.
I currently have a Discover card with the rewards program that changes categories every few months for 5%.
My FICO is 778. Should I:
1. Apply for the two cards at the same time, or
2. Wait for one, then apply for the other?
If #2, which card to apply for first?
Also, any other suggestions for rewards would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
artcubed,
With a score that high, and assuming you don't have more than 2-3 inquiries in the past year, you should be okay to apply for both at the same time. I'd do it during the day, during the same hour. Hopefully, the inquiry from the first company wouldn't show up before you applied for the second, increasing your chances of approval.
Amex almost definitely will hit Experian, FYI. Chase looks like a mixed bag, they might pull any of the three. There are reports online of Chase pulling 2 or all 3 reports too.
Let us know what happens if you decide to go for it!
SamCurt,
Hi. I'm an international student arrived at US just 1.5 months ago, SSN and state ID applied for, and as a grad student I have a yearly stipend of $20k+.
Spending patterns: The kind of schoolwork left me little chance to overspend, so probably any card used would be for necessities (rent, utilities, food, cell phone plans, meds) only, less than $1000 and pif.
So I have a check card from my credit union already (strangely, defying all recent cases, this large university is sleeping with a local credit union), but their student card's APR is 15.99%-- not bad, but just par.
The problem here is: I should apply a student card now, or I can just get one later since there's I won't need credit anyway?
Thanks!
(BTW: In my country the typical APR for a credit card is 27%.)
angelo21,
If you're using a debit card, you're using your own money. Get a cc. Check out what Citi or Chase , or even your CU have to offer. Don't wait. Build your credit and history now. Don't wait till you really need it. Good luck.

Review:
I purchased a BMW 330Cic last year and decided to get the BMW Platinum VISA Card. I was approved for a 12,500 credit line (the max is 15000) and received the card.
I had it in my desk for about 3 weeks and was planning a trip to southern Florida and went online to check out my account and found my available credit to be $0.
When I called customer service, they indicated I needed to fax in a copy of my electric bill for address verification and it should take 24 hours to release the hold and restore my available credit.
5 days went by and still nothing completed, I was calling daily to no avail.
On the Friday, I was told the only person who had the authority to resolve my issue was out until the following Tuesday, I was not a happy camper and let them know.
I then received the letter indicating they required an address verification, which I had already provided.
After almost 2 weeks, they indicated I no longer qualified for the card and that they were closing my account. I was ready to close it myself, they are horrible.
I indicated I was glad I had financed my BMW with my credit union!
I got rid of the BMW and the card - got a MB and a Lexus VISA Signature with twice the limit and awesome customer service.
Drive the car, finance with your bank or credit union and don't use the BMW card.

Discover refused my request to take a charge off of my card, even though the merchant never delivered what I had ordered. The "customer service" guy offered no help at all. I got the impression that his job is to make you hang up the phone. He would would not process my dispute and just kept talking in a patronizing tone. You are far better off disputing a charge with with a trusted local bank. The sad fact is that their 1-800 customer service people talk off of a script and are only there to delay or deny you from talking to someone at the company with a brain - who apparently have no interest in talking to you anyhow. Credit cards work fine until someone tries to screw you over, and then the only thing that matters is how responsive and responsible the credit card company is. Get your credit card elsewhere, because Discover isn't the company that's going to help you.

I was offered 0% on balance transfers over the phone. After transferring the balance, Pulaski Bank reneged and bumped the APR to 10%. After demanding an explanation, Pulaski blamed the customer service rep at an outsourced call center, stating that the rep who quoted me the 0% APR was "technically" not a part of their company (even though the rep handled customer service calls for Pulaski). Very poor trustworthiness and low integrity on the part of Pulaski.

This has to be one of the better cards on the market even with the new lower rebates. When you compare all of the other cards which I did just recently because I wanted to add another card to my wallet I really could not find anything that came close. Yes others offer bigger rebates for the short term but over all in the end are no better.
I have been with Citi for 17 years and they go out of their way to keep you as a customer. As far as the constant calls go all you have to do to stop them is call customer service and request that they do not call your for product solicitation.
The only negative I have about the company at all is that when ever you call customer service that you are asked every time if you want to join their credit protector program.
I have no plans now or in the future to ever leave this company. As for my second card I got the Discover More card. There are a few months a year you can use this card for 5% on gas. I plan to take advantage of the 5% categories through the year and then use Citi for all else.
Also with the Discover you have to take the rebated in increments of 20.00 if you have 24.00 you can only take 20.00. With Citi if you have 50.00 or more you can take what ever is in your account.
Best Feature: Good Rewards and Great Customer Service.
Worst Feature: Pay Pass Key Fob it promotes possible theft of your keys.

I've never written a review of anything before but I've had such a terrible experience with the Advanta card that I wanted to warn others. They mail out the statements so late that it's almost impossible not to get a late fee. They add them on, month after month. For four months I have been trying to quit the card, paying it off. Every month they say I owe more. Last month I was so angry that I asked to speak to a supervisor and asked precisely the amount left to pay it off if I put a check in the mail that day. I got the figure and I wrote the check and went straight to the mail box. Guess what I just got a letter with another late fee. I just talked to a supervisor. She said she undertood why I was angry but couldn't do anything about it.

I have had my Card now for 6 months and I love it - no worry or hassles. I load it weekly and never have an issue where I can't spend all of the money on it. Example, yesterday I had $18.17 on it and I spent $18.00 at the grocery store - not one problem with it. I never have a problem with customer service. I had an authorization on my account that the bill collector never processed; after 15 days it was return to me ($258.00 that I got back). I love how it will text you when you use it and I have never had a problem with their online service. Thanks wired plastic for having such a great card.

I signed up for this card in April in order to get the 8 bonus AirTran Points. I have been trying since May to get all of my points transferred, I have 5 points due. I have e-mailed 6 or 7 times and I have called 5 times. Everyone at Juniper agrees that they owe me points. They are "just having technical difficulties tranferring the points", and are "investigating" the problems.
These people are at best totally incompetent, or at worst running a scam. Avoid this card!
