You've Got Mail - From Your Credit Card Friends!
In 1998, credit card issuers could count on a response rate of 1.2% to the offers for new cards that they sent out. For every 1,000 pieces mailed, 12 people would sign up. The projected response rate this year is only 0.28%, or four times less than what the credit card industry received less than a decade ago. Now, for every 1,000 pieces of mail, not quite three of us bite at the offers being sent to us. (7/23/07)
Giving Credit Where Credit's Due: Three Cheers for Linda Sherry
My hat's off to Linda Sherry, the director of national priorities at Consumer Action (CA), for her 13 years of work in protecting our rights, whether the issue is unfair credit card practices, Internet privacy, insurance fraud, or bankruptcy reform. Linda is in charge of researching and writing the many free publications CA offers on these and other subjects - in addition to its important annual surveys of banks, credit cards, prepaid phone cards, and long distance telephone carriers. Proposed Regulations for the Credit Card Industry- Do They Go Far Enough?
In late May, the Federal Reserve came out with its proposals for changing the rules that the credit card industry must follow. The goal, according to Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben S. Bernanke: "is to make sure that consumers get key information about credit card terms in a clear and conspicuous format and at a time when it would be most useful to them . Greater clarity in credit disclosures allows consumers to make more informed credit decisions and enhances competition among credit card issuers." (6/11/07)

Got an American Express Credit Card? Decide How to Spend $5 Million! American Express has recently launched The Members Project, where it will contribute $1 for every AMEX cardholder who registers for the project by August 5, 2007 - up to a total of $5 million. Registration is free, and as best as I can tell, there are no costs for participants. Read more >>
Simmons Bank Credit Card Has Many Consumer-Friendly Features Recently, U.S. Senate hearings and Federal Reserve proposals regarding excessive credit card fees have filled the news. At such times it is refreshing to promote a card issuer whose card has been touted as being consumer friendly for many years. I am referring to Simmons First National Bank based in Arkansas and specifically to their Simmons First Visa Platinum Card. This card is truly unique as is the lending institution itself. Credit Card Debt? Think Twice Before Jumping on the Debt Settlement Bandwagon! If the credit card bills are piling up and you want a way out, you have got to be tempted by those ads that say: "Our debt settlement plan can reduce your debt 55%-70%!", "Reduce Your Debt by 60% Debt Settlement Guaranteed!", and "Settle your debts & save up to 75% of what you owe." HOT TOPICS - What is "FR" (Financial Review)
What is this "FR" (aka "Financial Review")? I keep seeing people mention it in some posts. It seems to be related to AmEx (or at least the posts I've seen have been focused on AmEx). What is this, how often is it, and what exactly does it do?
AJ, Okay, who personalizes their credit cards with Photos?
PoorImpluseControl, It is not ID protection. If a card is stolen you report it stolen and the account gets closed. Also, theives have any number of places where they can use a card without anyone looking for pictures on it - online, pay-at-pump, self-serve lines, etc.
LustfortheMoment, What makes the Navy Federal Credit Union card so worthwhile?
smallfry, I am a fairly new member in the Navy Federal Credit Union and they have treated me well so far. I refinanced my 6 month old car for 6%. The lowest rate quoted was 5% but since I have a 7 year old bankruptcy showing I didn't qualify for that. Also received two credit cards - one Visa and one MasterCard at 20K each which I just combined into one 40K Visa. The rate is 9.9%. I think I can get them to lower the APR after a year or so of history. I think they are pretty good. My options are limited with the bankruptcy. I am very happy with them and since I always pay in full the rate is but an ego thing. I live on less than I make.

Following is a sampling of the latest consumer reviews that can be found by clicking the "Cardholder Reviews" link above. We take pride in the quantity (our site offers approximately 19,000 reviews of 956 different credit cards) and quality of the consumer reviews that can be find on our site. New reviews are added on a daily basis. The cards are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest recommended. Credit Card: Nordstrom Platinum Visa® Card Review: Because of Nordstrom's impeccable service, online flat shipping rate, and wonderful selection, I do about 95% of my shopping in their stores. And for this they choose to reward me even further with bonus points, gift certificates, services, and frequent flyer miles. Unbelievable! There is no reason in the world to carry any other card. I will be loyal to Nordstrom's for life. Best Feature: Rewards/Levels Benefit Rating: 5 Service Rating: 5 Recommend: Yes Credit Card: Discover® Platinum Card Review: If you could only have one card this is the one to get. I have been a cardmember for over 20 years and they are very liberal with payment due dates. I was surprised to read the review by Chris because many times I have forgotten to mail the payment till the day it was due and never received a late charge or interest. Matter of fact I once called two days after the due date to let them know I had forgotten and they told me they would reverse any charges! I make over $600 dollars a year in rebates since I use it instead of my companys AMEX since they don't care. Best Feature: Good old fashioned customer service. Great cash back offers. Overall Rating: 5 Credit Card: Target® Visa® Card Review: I have had my Target Card for 3 years now and have not had any problems with it. I have read many reviews that slam Target and their customer service, but I have had an overall positive experience. Please don't blame Target for your credit history. New accounts, late payments, and requests for credit increase your overall risk and justify Target to take action to protect itself. Please read your card holder agreement. Also, when they raise your APR you always have the option to close your account and keep your old rate. Please read the information sent to you before blaming the big bad company! This card works best for me because I use the 10% off and I pay it off every month. Best Feature: Helpful customer service Overall Rating: 3.5 Credit Card: Wells Fargo Visa® Gold Card Review: I had this card for many years and used it responsibly, but when I got into a dispute with a merchant that did a bad job on my car, the dispute resolution was terrible. First, they credited the money back to my account. I sent them loads of pictures and paperwork, but they didn't look at the whole situation and on a technicality made me responsible for the bill. I called them to appeal, but they wouldn't call me back. It took them nine months to put the amount back on my account. On which I was in shock, because I had thought it was behind me. They gave me a fifty dollar credit because it took them so long, but that was only because of a law. They can do that to your account just like that! I strongly recommend that you don't get this card. Best Feature: Cash Back Overall Rating: 1 Credit Card: Bank of America WorldPoints Platinum Plus MasterCard® Credit Card Review: I opened the card with MBNA in 2001 with a fixed rate of 5.9% and never missed a payment. My credit score is above 700 and when I purchased my 2nd home in the last year we put some home repairs on the card. Putting the repairs on the card brought the card to about 95% of the available balance that we plained on paying over the next 6-8 months. We just received a letter from Bank of America that our rate was going up to 12%! It stated it was due to my credit but when I repulled my credit my score was 720! It is just a scam to raise people's interest rate when you use the the available credit. I will never open anything with Bank of America again! Best Feature: online access Overall Rating: 3 Credit Card: Blue from American Express® Review: I had the Blue card for about 8 years and it was great for almost 5 of those years. I never had a late payment to them and my credit score is 824, but they still increased my rate from 9.99% to 27% due to a review of my husband's credit history. All of my cards have always been paid on time and the card is an individual account - my husband is not on it. That was not right. It is my longest held card and I keep it but do not use it due to the APR. Best Feature: Customer Service in Distinguishable English Overall Rating: 3.5 Credit Card: First National Bank Platinum Edition Visa® Card Review: I have has this card for 5 years. I have never had any problems and have the same APR as when I first signed up. Rewards program was added to my card and the APR never changed. I think it is a pretty good card with no gimmicks, etc. Best Feature: Low APR Overall Rating: 4 Credit Card: Chase Freedom Card Review: Easy to redeem 1% to 3% cash back on purchases. "Wave" and pay feature built in but not available everywhere. The interest rate is way higher than any other card I carry. Be sure to not carry a balance if you get a similiar high interest rate. I use the card in place of using a debit card. I use it for gas purchases when I max out my 5% returns on my two other gas cards. Best Feature: 3% Cash back on gas and fast food Overall Rating: 3.5 Credit Card: Juniper Visa® Card Review: Even though I paid on time and over the minimum every month they treated me terribly. I took a cash advance one month and they immediatly lowered my credit line by $2,000. This advance was at a casino so I was then lectured on the bad habits of gaming. Adults should be treated as adults and allowed to use their credit for however they choose providing they pay in a responsible manner. If you need a strict father figure in your life choose this card! Best Feature: none Overall Rating: 1 The Cardholder Review section is a unique feature of our site and, to the best of our knowledge, there is no other organization or company that offers more consumer reviews of credit cards. It's all about consumers helping other consumers. As your might expect, this section of our site has been one of the most popular sections of our site since it was introduced in the summer of 2000. New reviews are posted on a daily basis. We hope that you will find this section of our site useful and that you will visit it on a regular basis. |
