HOT TOPICS...What's the Catch on Discover Card: 0%APR for Life on BT?
I got a mail offer with the above offer from Discover and from reading the fine print I find that:
- 0% on purchases until May 2006 and then 9.49%
- 0% on BT until May 2006 but may be extended indefinitely as long as you make 3 purchases per month starting May 2006.
- no min dollar amount on purchases specified in offer
- no min financial service charge specified in offer but there probably is one
Granted, starting May 2006 you have to start making purchases and since payments are credited to lower interest category first (ie, BT) the purchases are going to accrue at 9.49% monthly plus min financial charge.
This seem too good to be true. I would make small purchases totaling no more than $5-$10 per month and probably still come out way ahead in total interest changes if I moved my Capital One 5.9% Fixed for life to Discover.
Can anyone see any pitfalls in this offer?
Thanks
Chrys

I am 22 and have four credit cards. A BOA card, Express, Dillards and first premier. I got these cards at a time where I had minimal income. Now, they are all over limit and a month or so past due. I have been trying to keep up with it all, but the minimum payments are so high. At the beginning of the year, I got a really good job and have started paying off the $3000 I owe between the four cards. I am on a reduced interest payment plan for the BOA card and i am just trying to pay off the other three. Any advice, I am afraid I am going to get sued or something if I don't get my things straight.
NightStar
, Credit Expert, responds,
Need to contact the other 3 credit card companies and ask them what they have to offer for hardship programs. See if they can do the same for you as BOA did.
If you can't pay it now, pay off as many accounts as you can, and let one or two go, they may charge off but you can still make arrangements to pay them, you might have the others out of the way by then.
You can try to come back later and offer payments when you have the other ones under control. If you are going to have to default then pick the creditor with the least amount due, if the balance is under a certain amount, some creditors might not consider suing. Some sue on the spot regardless of balance.
I would recommend looking on the credit boards for posts individually about each creditor you have... see what others having defaulted may have said about how they deal with such and such companies... may give you more ideas on how to deal with each creditor and their collection policies.
jllo asks,
Is there under any kind of situation that would American Express cancel one's account due to not providing personal tax information?
I have a card that have credit limit of 10,000 with credit score of 737. Please advise how to avoid this kind of cancellations due to the taxation? I havent had file for tax.
Polonius, Credit Expert, answers,
Any card issuer can cancel your account at any time or change its terms. If your failure to pay taxes results in something in the public record (a lien, a judgment, a wage garnishment), then likely a credit bureau or two or three will pick that up and that will affect your credit score. A decrease in credit score can prompt a review of your account, and you might be asked to show proof of employment, submit your tax returns, etc.
As long as your credit score remains high, though, it's unlikely your failure to pay/file taxes will have any effect on your credit with AmEx.

Review:
I went to a large, expensive college and in turn messed up my credit from trying to pay tuition. I have tried over the last 4 years to pay my remaining obligations in a timely manner. I have one credit card with a $500 limit that I use sparingly. I really didn't want another card for fear of debt but my husband and I would like to buy a house in a few years. I researched cards and thought this card had considerably less fees the First Premier.
I was surprised when I was approved. I was even more surprised by my credit limit. I thought it would be around $300. Imagine my surprise when I opened the envelope and my limit was $750. I have used a few hundred dollars of my credit limit to pay some household bills. I will pay the entire balance when due from my household budget.
My annual fee is only $59 and I was not charged an application fee.
The only thing I dislike is that Orchard Bank would not let me put an authorized user on my account. They did inform me that I could apply with a co-applicant, which I will probably attempt in a few months.

Review: I am the type of credit card holder that pays in balances in full and has excellent credit.
Juniper credit card slammed me with a late payment fee even thought my payment was sent before the due date. The rep I spoke to and the supervisor refused to give me a one-time courtesy credit on a late fee even though I'd been a good customer for 3 years. Shop around if you have good credit; you can do better.

Review: I don't have a lot of experience with other cards and I've only had my Discover for five years, but my experience has been very positive. My wife and I use our card for all our purchases and pay the balance every month. Last year we made $500 in cash back and had no finance charges. I certainly don't have any complaints about receiving $500 free! The only negative comment I have about the card is the constant solicitation to enroll in new and costly programs. This is generally only an inconvenience though. If you don't incur finance charges, I think this is a very good card.

Review: AT&T lures you in with a low interest rate. After I carried balances from other ccards they increased my interest rate. Due to my excellent credit my interest was only 5.25% and for months they raised and raised the interest until I finally cancelled. The interest was at 14.24% - WOW I went back to look month after month they would increase the percentage. OUTRAGEOUS, I tried to talk to them since I dont like to move around. But they were rude, I insisted that it was not until I carried a huge balance that they started raising my interest. My payments were only paying interest and would merely deduct from my balances.
This ccard has been know to scam people, they run your credit every single month to try and find you missing a payment so they can raise your interest. This company is greedy and does not care about its customers.

Now I just sent in a payment and my balance was $75.00 over my credit limit because their due date kept changing. Watch your receipts very closely!!!

Review: My mother got an E.B. credit card as recommended by the store associate to save 10% on her days' purchase last November. E.B. or more specifically, World Financial Network Natonal Bank never sent a statement. Here it is, 10 months later and WFNNB is finally calling her, asking her to pay the bill. Mind you, they STILL have never sent a statement and they request her social security number. In today's environment of identity theft, I'd think it would suffice to have her name and address and to have contacted her by phone. Also, they want the $25 late fee and this may affect Mom's credit rating, which has always been impeccible. Mom is happy to pay what she owes, but she wants a copy of the statement showing what was purchased and when and for how much. Is that too much to ask?

Review: I have been a customer for over 8 years, the low interest rate and no annual fee were the original attraction. Since Feb of this year, my interest rate has slowly, then dramatically increased. My latest statement had a whopping 30.24%. I just got off the phone with their service professional and requested a reason why and to lower it. She stated that the lowest she could go was a variable 14.15%....Not as low as I'd like and deserve. I agreed to it, but will be shopping for a new card. I've dealt with them 4 times this year to catch creeping interest rates in check.

Review: I have had absolutely no problems with this card. With today's high gas prices 5%
off on gas is a big help. I enjoy getting the gas rebate every month instead of waiting
for an annual rebate, etc. Customer service has always been polite and efficient. I've
personally calculated my rebate every month to compare with theirs and theirs is always
correct. If there is any drawback it's not with the card, it's with Shell as their gas is
always at a premium compared to other competitors.
