Debit Cards Lack Protection that Credit Cards Offer

dispute or fraud. Debit cards lack the consumer protection that credit cards
offer. (8/19/03)

Hot Topics...Could this be true???
"The following was sent to me yesterday. I cannot vouch for its truthfulness.
It sounds very much like an urban legend, and I've deleted the name of the bank to
protect the guilty. For what it's worth, then......"

Guest, Union, asks "Does anyone know any banks who give credit cards with high
credit limits after year, year and half credit history.(no over limits,no late
payments) I have heard about MBNA and Fleet is that true?"
Reply from guest, Rick "Please DO NOT use MBNA. Their record of questionable
business ethics is well documented. You would be better off with a loan shark!"
Reply from guest, Sweetened "Phooey. MBNA didn't get to be the largest
credit card issuer by having a poor product. They didn't get rated #1 in customer
service for nothing. Rick wasn't meeting his minimum payments and now is griping
because of the results.Either that or he opened up numerous other accounts which
then raised his risk with the bank. In any case,it's simply a case of sour grapes.
Call MBNA. See what they have. They will not give you a card if there are any
bankruptcies in your past, though."
Guest, New Victim, asks "As of July 31st I found out that my SS# and other
ID info has been stolen. In the month of June, someone has begun to open up at
least four in-store credit accnts in my name. The listing on my credit report I
cant figure out is GRDN/CBUSA. Any ideas or how I can find out? I would also greatly
appreciate guidance in how to preserve my good (for now) credit now that someone
is using it in at least four separate acts of fraud. I have already contacted the
three national credit bureaus and instituted a fraud alert. Thanks much for your
help"
Senior Member, Verne, replies "You need to contact the Internet Fraud Center,
a branch of the FBI. I don't have the web address handy but it's easy to find.
There's an online complaint form for ID theft victims. Others to contact would
include the FTC and law enforcement. A fraud alert on the Credit Report will not
stop new lines of credit from being opened. It's really cosmetic. You should also
pressure the creditors for copies of the forged credit applications.
Law enforcement will need these to track them down."

Review: I started as a Ford
MC and with a goal of using Ford Rebate Points. Program was changed
significantly before I could accumulate points. Then an expiration was added
and max pts that could be used lowered. Students should get serious as rebate
apply only to new vehicles and you may need to wait for years to buy new. I
recently had a notice that my limit was rasied to a very large amount and
then a major change in Terms after that. Thank you...but no thanks..letter
canceling card mailed today.

Review: I own ten credit cards.
I have found that this card is one of the few that actually performs as
stated. They have saved me thousands when my card was hacked on-line and have
also notified me when legitimate spendingf fell outside of my pattern. In
addition, they were quick to respond to accessing there promotion. While you
may get a half point better rate, you will not get any better service or
support. I rate these guys the best of the bunch.

Review: If you love to earn gift certificates, this
one is for you! I love those $25 GC's. For those of us who use credit wisely,
and pay off our bills in full each month this is an excellent card. I'm amazed
how many of you "suddenly" and "without warning" have mysterious charges that
appear on your card, and are all of a sudden past due and prevent you from
getting a mortgage. You really need to be responsible for your own credit and
be proactive. Get copies of your credit report, review them for accuracy
2x a year and you wont get declined by lenders.
