Began building my credit about 9 months ago(577 eq midscore), started with First National Bank of Marin and Aspire Visa. Both have high fees and high apr.Since that time have improved my scores to 620 tu,635 eq,637 ex. I now have two no annual fee credit cards: Providian Platinum and Household Visa. I would like very much to dump the 2 annual fee cards but I'm planning to enter the housing market next spring and I'm afraid that my credit scores will be hurt if I get rid of my oldest revolving credit lines. I only received the no annual fee cards in the past two months. My question is whether it would be prudent to follow my gut and cancel these two cards?
As a follow up question I'm wondering what would be a good card to get as my scores continue to improve, and what is the next approximate threshold for a card like that.(650,660)?
This site has been a great help to me and my wife. I've been looking for something like this for a long time and figured it didn't exist.
Polonius, Credit Expert, responds,
Best advice is to keep the cards current, don't carry a balance on them but use them once or twice in the next year--and then cancel them both before the annual fees are charged once again. That will keep their positive contribution to your credit scores and not cost you anything. Why cancel now when you can cancel much later for no additional cost?
As for the breakpoints on credit scores, those vary by lenders. I've read 700 is a major breakpoint for a FICO score, also 720 and 740...

Hi, Wonder if anyone recently received a new Chase Platinum Visa and cannot get online? I try to enroll online, and get a message that says the info I entered (acct number, etc) is not in their system.
When I called customer service, they told me that there's a problem with the system for some cards due to the merger of Chase and Bankone, and it may take a couple of months before I can access my info online.
This seems foolish to me, especially because the info sent with my card says that online access is one of the features of my account.
I pay all my cards online, and this is a real inconvenience.
Alexis Rios answers,
Call again to the customer service , and insist about to send you to the technical dept. and explains the problem. Must likely they erase their password and you must re-enter the password.

Review:
I was a card holder for 10 years and switched to the signature card. I travel a lot for work and use the
card for expenses. Bank of America was turning off my card constantly. Customer service was rude when I called to resolve the problem. When I went into the bank to cancel the card, they told me that feature could be removed. Before that, I had called them 5 times to turn off the fraud protection! Switched to MBNA with no problems.

Review: We've used this card for years to fly to Hawaii for the winters, but for the last three
years we haven't been able to get flights when we wanted them. We've even called 330 days in advance (when the seats become
available) and been unable to book when we wanted. I don't know if they've cut down on the seats available for frequent flyer travel, or if there's just a huge demand for these tickets, but we've quit using the card and are using American Advantage M/C now without problems.

Credit Card: American Express® Rewards Green Card

Review: This is the most solid card you can get, any charge account from American Express, even
just the basic level green card, brings a certain amount of presteige and respect. I don't know why people knock this card
as I've seen in some reviews. I've never had a single issue with it. I think probably the main issue, as I've seen from some
reviews, is that people get a pay in full card from AMEX (probably just because they want to try to be a big shot) can't pay
it in full every month, and then call AMEX to gripe because they got a late charge. And people are amazed because they won't
waive the fee. Folks, it's American Express, of COURSE they won't waive the fee, and anyone that takes out a card knows full
well what the terms are. It's a great card to have don't get me wrong but perhaps, in light of some of the sour grapes reviews I'm reading, there are some that should give up the AMEX card and apply for a secured credit card with a smaller bank that would perhaps expect its clients to be delinquent on occasion.
Best Feature: It's American Express...it's the best...hands down!!
Worst Feature: Not a thing!!

Review: I filed bankruptcy and needed to have my credit restored. I searched for the right card and
found it. I haven't had a problem with this card at all. Sure it took about 3 weeks to receive it, but I was not in a hurry. .I have bad credit so I needed the added
weeks to make sure I was ready for credit restoral. I am now on the road to making better decions and being responsible for
my decisions to having better credit. Thank-you NMB for making this available for those of us who didn't really understand
the importance of having good credit and giving a second chance at it.

Review: After being a Diner Club card holder for years, today I have closed my account. With the
new mastercard alliance, reduced grace period, but no reduction in the annual fee, the account is worthless. I have many
other rebate credit cards that offer better than this (avg 1% back) card with no fee's and lower interest rates. I am
guessing a lot of other cardholders feel this way and will be doing the same. Sorry to say goodbye, but not sorry enough to
be ripped off.

Review: Folks: First I agree with the many reviews that state "READ the fine print", and to pay
your bill as soon as it arrives. However, from personal experience, I have found the Orchard Bank Card a much better
experience and the card to have. I am not inundated with excessive fees and credit increases are much easier. You can pay by
check, phone or online wihtout the problems everyone has noted. The interest rate is higher, but at least you get a card
with a decent balance. I have since closed my Orchard card (with no hassles) and am on to bigger things. It is tough, but as
many are realizing now, your credit is key to everything. Be smart, not hasty.

Review: I have had many financial issues in 2003 and 2004 and as a result my credit took a nose
dive. In late 2004, I was getting back on my feet and wanted to rebuild me credit and Capital One issue me one of there cards,
it had a annual fee, high interest and a low limit, all of which I expected. I have no issuse with the card, and was glad
they were willing to take a chance on me. I had actually called them tooking for a secured card. Now 7 months later, they
issued me this card with a $1000 limit, which is the highest I have current. This is nothing compared to what I had in the
past, but I could not ask for more with my credit history. So far I have had no issues with the card, and I am thankful for Capital One who is giving me a chance to rebuild my credit. I agree with the last entry, if you have a problem with the card, why not get one better suited for your needs, especially if you are one of those people who claim to have great credit. I am very happy with Capital One, I enjoy being able to view and pay everything online with no fees. Thanks Capital One!
