Credit Card Interest: You're Paying Much More Than You Think ... Thanks To Taxes
In years past, taxpayers could deduct the amount they spent on credit card interest. But once the Tax Reform Act of 1986 took effect, that was no longer the case. Without that deduction, we are paying our credit card bills with "after-tax dollars" - that is, money we've already paid taxes on - which means our credit cards are costing us more than we probably realize. A lot more. (4/11/06)

HOT TOPICS...Is there such a thing as too many credit cards?

I think at this point I have 20 cards including 3 store cards. I have every card that I want right now but in the future, when our Lowe's store opens, I'd like to get a Lowe's project card. I have about 2% utilization total on the 20 cards (spread out amongst 4-5 cards). Most of these cards will be filed away for use maybe once a year as they are very specialized (hotel card, reward card for car rental, etc). Will having this many cards stop me from getting one more? Or will it show that I am financially responsible?

aman74, Hi all, nice board you have here. I need a little help with a couple questions. If someone has the time or inclanation to answer it will be much appreciated. My FICO is around 760, but now I am unemployed. My current main card is a Chase Platinum that I have had in good standing for years. It is a variable rate that I believe is around 13 percent right now. They keep automatically raising my limit. It's around 23,000 right now. I see from reading here that these raises are good, but awhile back I asked them to stop as I didn't want my potential debt to be too high. I have some older cards as well, but heard it's best not to cancel the unused ones.
-So with no job, was stopping the increases a good move?
-My balance is getting close to the 50 percent mark, I hear that is a negative so am wondering if it's best to let the card limit increase.
-I don't pay late, but is it better to pay early? I thought it didn't matter, but I saw reference that it can help
-I'm disturbed to hear that Chase uses 2-cycle billing. Does this affect me since I carry a large balance? I do sometimes have new purchases as well.
-Any tips on gettting a better rate from Chase?
-I'd like to get a new card, but with no job will it be tough? That's why I thought it might be easier to negotiate a lower rate with Chase, but then I'm still stuck with 2-cycle billing.

QikPass answers, First of all...dont close your older cards. Since you have a relatively high credit score, try applying for a new card with a 0% balance transfer offer for 12 or 15 months. I would recommend AMEX as they give generous limits and the 0% is also for purchases for 15 months. When your card is being activated call them and ask for a limit increase if they don't give you a limit to cover your entire balance. However, with a 23,000 CHASE card already in your possession, they will probably start you off around a 25,000 limit anyway. Balance transfer what's on your CHASE card to your new AMEX card and pay the minimum until you are able to get back on your feet. You may have to eat a $75 balance transfer fee, but with such a large balance at 0% it's nothing compared to what you will save on the interest. Good Luck.. hope this helps.

gsr, For those who bank with Bank of America...... when you sign out and they give you an offer for a card is it more likely they will approve you for that card because they offered it? Recently they offered me a MBNA rewards card.

Ira answers, about 5-6 months ago...all I had was a cap 1 with a 700 limit. When I signed out of online banking there was an offer for a Power Rewards card. I have been with BOA by default becasue they bought out my bank about a year ago (fleet). I have direct deposit. I took a shot...figured they would turn me down. BAM !!!!!!!!! 7k limit baby. I think it was due in part to my being a customer and them seeing my bi-monthly deposits...

Review: I stupidly activated my Legacy Visa card and there are charges on it that I never made. They say they are First National Bank but they won't give me a "physical" address, just a P.O. Box. I am not paying on it anymore. They can keep it. I have checked all over the internet and I can't even find them. All that comes up are "Rip Off" sites.

Review: I've had the card for many years, bought many airlines tickets with the reward miles, etc. One thing I really value is flexibility. Last year, I was unemployed and needed a ticket for a job interview. My miles were short by about 5,000 points. After begging and pleading and calling twice, I finally got someone that 'fronted' me the points in advance. I got the ticket, the job, and had the points 'paid off' in a few months. You don't get that kind of service from everybody. With that said, I use USAA for everything else. They have the BEST customer service.

Review: In light of all the bad reviews here (I just blasted my Citicard, never get one) I wanted to report that I enjoyed using my Chase 0% APR for 12 months Platinum Visa. Payment options were good and the customer service was good. Maybe because I was stupid enough to sign up for the payment protector....don't do this.

Review: It was a great card when it was FirstUSA. They had phenomenal service at that time. Then it became BankOne and it was ok. Now that it is Chase it is horrible. Chase customer service is non-existent, they are way too big for customer service. The Chase card center interface is horrible, you can't find anything on it without wasting a lot of time. You used to be able to pay on the deadline day but now that it is Chase, if you pay online and on the same day they charge a convenience fee of $14 to take your payment - that defeats the whole point of an instant online payment! I am looking around for another rewards program.

Best Feature: Rewards program - points based, get gift certificates
Worst Feature: The new Chase bank interface. It is minimalistic and difficult to find anything.

Review: I received letters about this card in the mail for a while and decided to give it a try and I am glad that I did. This is a great card for parents to get their teenagers to help them build their credit for a better future. This card has no interest rate and no activation fee. It's a really good credit card to start off with.
