FEATURED NEWS STORIES

Credit Card Foreign Transaction Fees on the Rise Foreign exchange fees on credit cards should be of keen interest to those traveling beyond the borders of the United States. Exchange rates offered by credit cards are usually hard to beat. Of equal and perhaps greater importance, however, is the foreign transaction fee that your credit card bill might show once you have returned home from your trip. This fee, which is often a shock to cardholders, has been increasing as of late. Read more >>

How Americans Really Feel About Personal Finances An awful lot of Americans feel there's no money, no cushion, no hope, say the results of a Discover commissioned survey. The number of families that had no money left over after paying their monthly bills rose from 38% in May … to 50% in July.. Read more >>

AJ, Hello fellow experts. Why do I have a 8.9 fixed rate across the board with only a 2500 limit that cannot be raised by request? The account was opened in Jan 2006. Should it be kept open for utilzation purposes or dump em? I have 9 accounts with 10k or more. My oldest account, that is still open, was opened in 1999. My closed accounts date back to 1994.

angelo21 answers, Why have this if it doesn't suit your needs? It's only a year old. I'd dump it.

Robinj41, My name is Robin and I am on here looking for some serious help. I applied for Circuit City Rewards Card tonight and I was approved for $1000. Is there anyone out there who has the same card and did you ever have problems with them? Plus, did you receive your card on time? I filed bankruptcy last year and I am very picky about what I apply for now. I don't want to be scamed or get my identity stolen. So, please let me know soon as possible.

artcubed, Circuit City's cards are issued by Chase. I've never had a Circuit City card, but I've had Chase cards in the past. Never really had a problem with their customer service (except when trying to get a credit limit increase, but that's another story) and yes, I got my card on time.

Review: In keeping with the Nordstrom family's long tradition (I remember when they were just a shoe store!) of flawless customer service, honesty and fairness, the Signature Visa Card is great! We have many cards we have collected over the years but they now sit unused, with ZERO balances, in a drawer because the Nordstrom Card is the only one we will EVER use from now on. We can pay our bill IN FULL anytime, in any Nordstom Store without any of the "2 cycle billing" theft practiced by other card companies. They are always polite and the customer is always right (even when we know we are not!). Chase, Citi, etc, could learn alot from the Nordstrom's if they were interested in improving their product (which they are certainly NOT interested in doing, from all indications). The Signature Visa is the best card out there. If you can get one, do so, and let the other cards rot in the drawer!

Best Feature: Service, Courtesy, Rewards, Low Rates, No "over limit" fees, and NO HEADACHES!!!
Worst Feature: None! An almost perfect card!

Review: I have had this card for two years. My credit limit has only been raised once from $300 to $500. I have other cards with much higher limits. Each time I request a credit limit increase, I am given the same lame response: "Capital One is a conservative lender, accounts are reviwed for credit limit increases periodically." I don't necessarily agree with this theory. Capital One seems to offer consumers several cards with lower limits, so that they make their money and stay in business by overlimit fees, etc. If a customer stops using their card, their limit will be increased. However, many people pay off their balance in full and charge it right back up over the limit. Will this cycle ever end?

Worst Feature: Low Credit Limit

Credit Card: Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Card

Review: Here's a disturbing incident I recently experienced regarding the $50 companion fare. Alaska Airlines has gone to an online process for using the $50 companion fare. They give you a code to punch in when you make your reservations on its website. I recently discovered that I was quoted two different base fares for identical flights, depending upon whether I had punched in the companion fare code or not. Specifically, when I searched for a flight to Orlando for just one person, I was quoted a base fare about $80 cheaper than when I punched in the $50 companion fare code and searched for seats for 2 people. Identical flights, two different base fares. You still get your $50 companion fare (plus fees and taxes), but you'll pay more for seat #1. You still save some money, but I think this is pretty sleazy. If you're a card holder, try it yourself sometime. Maybe it was just a fluke. I have my doubts.

Best Feature: $50 companion fare
Worst Feature: limited supply of seats available for free travel

Review: I love the customer service at USAA. They look out for you and if there is an unusual charge they will even call the house to ensure that it is Okay. Not long ago, the number WAS actually compromised- and USAA (not me) caught it right away and asked my permission to cancel and send a new card. In this era of identity theft, it's nice to know that someone has your six.

Review: My husband inadvertently left a $70 unpaid balance, when paying the bill on time last month. The interest fee for the $70 remaining balance was over $35. After we called to protest, they informed us that the fee is based on the average daily balance - not what was unpaid.

Best Feature: A customer service representative actually returned my call!
Worst Feature: Interest charge is outrageous!

Review: I spend $2500 a month, so I quickly get to the $6500 minimum for the higher level. I haven't had any problems at all with the card or rebate program. I highly recommended this card for all those who charge > $6500/yr, and pay off their account each month.

Best Feature: Great cash rewards
Worst Feature: Late one day on payment? It'll wipe out your rebate for the year.

Review: I use Discover for most purchases including rent, phone, cable, etc. This allows me to pay almost everything in one online payment every month. You can set up a payment in advance so you don't forget. I recently had some fraudulent charges show up on my bill. I called Discover and they were very helpful in getting me a new number and taking care of the charges. Discover also offers you a choice of 150 card designs for free. Even if you have the standard silver one, just go online and choose an new design and they will send it to you - no charge. The online secure number generation is also a great feature for those who buy online. Since the fraud, I am using this a lot. For any vendor you do repeated business with (Power Utility, Cell phone, PayPal, etc.) just generate a new card number that can be used only with that vendor. If that ever gets stolen, you can cancel that number only and make a new one with no effect on you main card number. For normal buying at stores, you will just use the card. Overall, Discover is the best and allows you to become nearly cashless while reducing your bill paying substantially. The cash back is not large but does add up over time. I highly recommend this to people that pay off their balance each month.

Best Feature: Cash rebates on everything with 5% on car repair & gas. Great online service
Worst Feature: None if you pay off balance every month

Review: I still have a bankruptcy showing and a paid Federal Tax Lien showing. They offered me this card with a 0% APR for 12 billing cycles, then to 12.9%. There is no annual fee. There is no fee for paying online. They started me off with a $300 credit limit. Almost too good to be true. So far so good! Oh yeah, it is a cash back rewards card as well.

Review: I am a banking customer with Citibank and have enjoyed the freedom to bank around the world with them. The World Mastercard has some nice perks. However, I have a USAirways Mastercard from Barclays Bank and they give a day pass, companion certificate and $75 off a yearly membership to the airline club. If AA/Citibank would do this it would be the perfect card.

Best Feature: Two financially stable giants Citibank and American Airlines team up to offer a great card.
Worst Feature: American Airlines does not compete with others in benefits with card membership.
